Housing

Fall and Spring students have the option to stay in one of the international student dorms or arrange their own housing. Summer students have the options to stay in a hotel, homestay, or arrange their own housing. Commute times will vary depending on whether your lab placement is on the Suita or Toyonaka campus.

Dorm

Fall and Spring Housing Only

Dorm rooms are single occupancy with a shared common room, bathroom, and a small kitchenette. Residents are separated by gender. Students often join social activities organized by residence hall staff, including holiday parties, tea ceremonies, Ikebana classes, and sports events.

Osaka University is unable to provide university housing for all exchange students and placement in a dorm is not guaranteed. If you do not receive a space in the dorms, you will have the option to live in a homestay, university affiliated furnished apartment, or make your own housing arrangements.

Homestay

Summer, Fall, and Spring Housing.

Summer students will rank their preference between a homestay or hotel room.

Fall and Spring students who do not receive a space in the dorms will have the option to stay in a homestay in Osaka.

A Japanese homestay typically means renting a room in a compact apartment in a tall building. You should expect to communicate almost exclusively in Japanese during your stay, so this is an excellent opportunity to develop your language skills. Many students form close relationships with their homestay families and return for later visits.
