Course Description

This course examines how cosmetics and personal care products work from a scientific standpoint. Chemistry plays a key role in the manufacturing and continual improvement of personal care and other household products. It is involved in all stages, from the chemical extraction of natural products to the packaging of final consumer products. Throughout the course, students will learn the interaction of skin-care chemicals with lipids in the skin, the suspension of oil in emulsions, and how sunscreens filter or scatter UV light. Furthermore, the students will learn how to interpret ingredient lists and understand their roles. Marketing hype and trends, such as anti-aging, will be dissected to examine the underlying scientific principles and negative campaigns analyzed to evaluate their veracity.

Course Description

This course is an introduction to history and theory in architecture and landscape architecture. To understand the making of built places, from the scale of the house to that of the city, the course is built around three questions: what is the built environment and how is it formed and transformed; how do we analyze built places and how might we imagine and create better social and environmental outcomes in our built places through design. Using a contemporary city as its key case study, location for student fieldwork and the mapping of places, the course is organized into four parts, addressing in turn: infrastructures, housing, health, and knowledge institutions.

Course Description
This course incorporates molecular, preclinical, and clinical models of brain function. These biological models of brain function are linked with behavioral, affective, and cognitive function and dysfunction. Students explore the implications of focal cognitive deficits in neurological patients as models of normal cognitive function. Topics include the biological basis of feeding and appetite; psychoneuroimmunology; glial cell function; the neural basis of learning and memory; sensorimotor integration; neurodegenerative disease; social neuroscience; language; visual cognition; and praxis. In addition to lectures, the practical component of the course covers basic neuroanatomy and introduces students to experimental and case-study approaches to studying neurosciences.
