This graduate research course provides training in experimental skills and scientific presentation for doing research in the field of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Students choose their own research topic and perform research under the guidance of a subject matter expert in their field. The course varies depending on the research topic but it may include weekly lab meetings; presentations of up-to-date research articles, and participation in scientific discussion with the instructor and lab colleagues. 

This course introduces the knowledge and tools to record and arrange popular music. Using one of the most ubiquitous music-making tools in the market, GarageBand, this practical based course allows students the opportunities to explore recording and editing of melodies, harmonies, and basic bass & drum patterns using software instruments. Students explore the use of Apple Loops to enhance arrangement ideas. In addition, students learn about the specific musical terms and concepts to better understand and describe music arrangements. This course deepens technological content knowledge and improves self-efficacy in the development of students' musical abilities. No audition is required.

This course introduces critical approaches in human geography to understanding the relationships between landscapes, power, and society. The critical approaches applied in this course stem from ideas within cultural, political, and social geographies which centralize the role of power in socio-spatial dynamics, and how power produces complex relations between society and the landscapes we inhabit. Critical approaches in human geography provide a framework to understand society and landscapes as carrying multiple meanings. Students examine society as composed of knowledge, institutions, community dynamics, representations, discourses, inclusions/exclusions, material aspects, and more. Similarly, landscapes are explored in terms of nature, bodies, the imagination, digital realms, technology, everyday experiences, and other dimensions. These various perspectives demonstrate how power imbues landscapes and society with various meanings, and how ideas in human geography can critically analyze the co-production and experiences of landscapes, power, and society.

This course explores key features of Chinese society and their application to Chinese business culture from a sociological perspectives. It begins with a comparative analysis about the structural differences between the Chinese and Western societies and moves on to discuss the social, economic and cultural implications of such differences. After establishing basic analytical perspectives, focus is on Chinese business culture and exploring emerging patterns in areas like retailing and consumer behaviors, work relations and management, business negotiation. Overall, the course emphasizes contemporary issues, real world observations, and comparisons to western society and culture. Students are encouraged to draw on their direct observation, compare to their experiences in their home countries. The course includes several video sessions in class and field trips to local communities.

This course introduces biodiversity of life on earth, and key principles of ecology and conservation. The emphasis is on learning through field classes which will take place in the South Downs National Park. The University is in the heart of the South Downs National Park so students have the opportunity for experiential learning on the key themes: biodiversity, ecology and conservation. Students also learn survey and identification skills through these field trips. The course develops an understanding of conservation and applied ecology in relation to real-world problems, through topics including biodiversity, community ecology, and practical land management for conservation. An example of this is the mowing of grasslands to help maintain grass cover, encourage re-growth, and productivity.

The course introduces the basic concepts of discrete mathematics needed for the study of computer science. Student learn to work with sets, relations, functions, recursive structures, graphs, trees, basic combinatorial principles, discrete probability, finite automata, and regular languages. 

Through anthropological and historical approaches, this course delves into religious and spiritual beliefs, ritual practices, and magical material culture in Thailand, offering a nuanced view towards modern Thai society as well as cultivating the appreciation of religious plurality. 

This course offers an introduction to critical thinking and problem-solving. Topics include: theoretical foundations of thinking; the human brain and decision-making; models of thinking; phases of the analysis process and the creative process; parallels and divergences; creative and critical problem-solving; proactivity and innovation.
