Course Description

This course explores language structure, in particular, patterns of sentence structure (syntax) and of meaning (semantics), from a cross-linguistic perspective. Concepts discussed include: grammatical categories, semantic relations, grammatical relations, constituency, and the relationship between grammar and the lexicon. A key feature of the course is its emphasis on the evidence and argumentation that bears upon the representation of structure and principles of grammar that we postulate. The course provides the foundation for the study of advanced courses investigating linguistic structure.

Course Description
This course takes a critical perspective about how we can think about law, society, and justice. The premise is that to understand law demands understanding society. The course holds the belief that such a contextual approach to studying law allows for a meaningful discussion about justice and what it pertains to in contemporary society. This course distinguished between and describes different perspectives on law in context, in particular with the major topics in law and society, and socio-legal theory. Students are taught different types of arguments such as theoretical vs. empirical and legally valid vs. philosophically sound.

Course Description

This course explores the intersection of politics and culture in early medieval Europe through the strange fate of the Carolingian kingdom of Lotharingia. The slow-motion collapse of this kingdom, linked to an extraordinary marriage scandal, is uniquely well-documented, through secret treaties, letters both confidential and public, the minutes of staged show trials, records of tense summit meetings, learned legal advice, and rich and often spiteful contemporary narratives. Drawing on these sources, students explore key themes in early medieval European history, including the contested meaning of empire, dynastic rulership, the evolution of queenship, the use of the written word, legal pluralism, the impact of the Vikings, and the changing role of the papacy.
