Course Description
This course provides an introduction to the Italian Renaissance, a major cultural and artistic phenomenon, which deeply marked Europe between 1400 and 1600. Initiated in Florence where it flourished in the first decade of the fifteenth century (Quattrocento), it quickly spread to all major Italian courts and eventually throughout Europe. This course introduces the student to the history of the Renaissance in Italy in the fifteenth century and provides them with a solid foundation of historical knowledge as well as visual references in the history of modern art. The sessions cover, in turn, the heritage of international Gothic, the rise of the great urban centers of the Italian Renaissance (Florence and Rome but also Venice, Mantua, Ferrara, and Milan) and the work of major artists, including Botticelli, Mantegna, Michelangelo, Raphael, and da Vinci. The lectures are supplemented by discussions during which the students delve deeper into the themes, concepts, and works in progress as well as the foundations of the commentary methods on the works (sculpture, architecture, painting, decorative arts) in art history.

Course Description
This course considers the importance of political identities in understanding recent events that have turned the world upside down, such as the new “indignation” protests (Occupy, Indignados, Yellow Vests) and the emergence of populism (Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, Syriza, Front National). The course covers how ideologies are formed in these movements as well as the role of political dispute in winning hearts and minds. The course introduces, develops, and critically engages key concepts of Discourse Theory. In particular, the course, referring to a wide range of sources, including post-structuralism and psychoanalysis, explains how political identities are discursively constructed on antagonisms and how different discourses dispute the hegemony of the construction of these identities. The course tries to conciliate two moments. Firstly, a theoretical part, which presents the ontological presuppositions of Discourse Theory as well as key concepts such as antagonism, hegemony, ideology, affect, fantasy, and enjoyment. Secondly, a more practical part, devoted to the application of Discourse Theory in the analysis of empirical cases, showing how the tools encountered throughout the classes open a productive path towards studying contemporary political phenomena.

Course Description

This course applies a gender perspective to different sociological objects and illustrates how this perspective can enrich our analysis of society. The course covers how sociology has integrated gender (or not) in the analysis of the family, education, labor markets, or politics. This is a general sociology course that addresses some of the key questions that interest sociologists while systematically applying a gender perspective to these questions. It also studies gender as a social category, discusses how it is produced and reproduced in society, and how it relates to social inequalities. This course provides a new perspective on some of the topics covered in introductory sociology classes, and it covers also some additional ones. Some previous background in sociology is recommended, but not required to follow the course.
