<Level VII>
Target Students: Those who have completed and mastered intermediate-level studies.
Course Goals: To master the 200 important intermediate sentence patterns and develop understanding and command of the 100 important advanced sentence patterns for further improvement of the four skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. To master the 10,000 basic words and 2,000 basic Chinese characters.
<General 1-5>
Goal: To develop a balanced, advanced level of proficiency in reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
Contents: Mastery of intermediate sentence patterns and introduction of 100 important advanced sentence patterns, using Doshisha University’s original textbook and support materials. For students to be able to use all the expressions in an appropriate manner, exercises will be of typical situations where each expression is used, without categorizing them into grammar or vocabulary issues. Vocabulary building with an emphasis on collocation. Improving the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through summarizing, reading, and listening comprehension of the materials; role-play using expressions learned in class, and composition exercises.
COURSE DETAIL
This course is designed for students who have learned basic kanji compounds to expand their vocabulary by examining the meaning of Kanji components (radical), and on and kun pronunciation. In the course, students practice to understand the meaning of kanji used in sentences based on the context and learn more kanji compounds.

Target Students: Those who have completed and mastered elementary level studies.
Course Goals: To develop understanding and command of the 100 important intermediate sentence patterns for further improvement of the four skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. To master the 4,000 basic words and 800 basic Chinese characters.
<Oral Expression A>
Goal: To understand daily conversation and be able to express one’s own opinions properly.
Contents: Exercises on pronunciation, rhythm, accent and intonation. Understanding oral expressions used in daily conversation. Learning expressions used for explaining and giving opinions and making a short speech.
COURSE DETAIL
This course provides an overview of Japanese fermented foods, Sendai miso, as well as the overseas expansion of Sendai miso. The first part of the course introduces fermented Japanese and international cuisines and seasonings. The latter part of the course provides guest speaker lectures on Sendai miso, along with factory tours where it is cultivated. Students will be encouraged to make suggestions on how to develop recipes and market Sendai miso to promote it to their countries and regions.
Taught in Japanese, this course is open to domestic and international students. By interacting with students from various backgrounds, students will acquire communication and collaboration skills.
COURSE DETAIL
This course explores modern Japan’s twentieth century environmental history, specifically focusing on how, when, and why birds and their habitat have been threatened by hunting, collecting, trade, war, pollution, tourism, and urbanization. How and why did some species become extinct, while others survived? The course is based on discussions about primary and secondary source readings, and occasionally material culture items such as postcards, postage stamps and posters. By the end of the course students should be familiar with important events, issues, and texts related to the environmental history of modern Japan.
COURSE DETAIL
This basic Japanese course is designed to improve speaking skills. A different theme concerning Japanese culture and society is chosen for each course and students are split into groups to engage in activities, discussion, and group work concerning the selected topic. The overall goal of the class is for students to widen their perspectives and deepen their knowledge regarding various issues related to Japan and Japanese society. The program offers various theme courses and students may take multiple sections.
COURSE DETAIL
This course examines the psychology of experiencing cultural difference and investigates the cultural differences between Japan and other countries. Culture affects us at the level of the unconscious mind and understanding cultural difference requires the process of deep culture learning. The class has two parts, 1) the psychology of deep culture, and 2) analyzing cultural difference. The goal of this course is to gain a deeper understanding of how culture shapes our minds as well as a deeper understanding of Japan and other cultural communities.

COURSE DETAIL
This course is designed for students who have learned approximately 100-150 Kanji . The goal of the course is to enable students to write and comprehend a variety of basic kanji in contexts and to understand the meaning of Kanji components. Each lesson covers new 16 kanji and its compounds.
COURSE DETAIL
This seminar course focuses on globalization and the development of education, especially the effect that globalization and development have on societies and education systems in Asia. The course explores the roles and activities of agencies such as the UN, the World Bank, JICA, and grassroots NGOs as well as their impact on education in the developed and developing countries of East and Southeast Asia.
