Course Description
This course provides understanding of the theory of negotiation as it is practiced in a variety of strategic settings. The course is relevant to the broad spectrum of negotiation problems that are faced by managers and specific examples from international strategy such as M and A and joint ventures are used. The course provides an opportunity to develop skills experientially and to understand negotiation in useful analytic frameworks. Considerable emphasis is placed on role-playing exercises and case studies. This course requires participation in a number of negotiations. Preparation for these negotiations, which are a large part of the final grade, requires time-pressured reading of material in class.

Course Description
Latin American music has become a powerful force in today's music industry, but its rich diversity and cultural contexts are not always known or acknowledged. This course surveys a number of Latin American popular, folk, and indigenous musical traditions in terms of their cultural milieu and historical development. These include Afro-Cuban traditions, samba, salsa, tango, and Andean music. Various musical, historical, and cultural concerns are examined alongside a practical and creative involvement with the compositional characteristics and the repertoire pertinent to these traditions.

Course Description
This course studies a variety of American literary and visual texts to consider what it means to read "nationally". We first examine the rise of literary nationalism to look then at the ways in which exigencies of empire, race and ethnicity, and gender and sexuality, for example, have exerted pressure on the fantasy of a cohesive national culture. We also consider the transnational turn of recent decades to understand the nation's function in a global context.

Course Description

This course brings together traditional genetic analysis and modern molecular biology to study genetics of all life forms from humans and other complex multicellular organisms through to single celled organisms such as bacteria. Students are introduced to complex modes of Mendelian inheritance, including those involved in human diseases. The molecular basis for different patterns of inheritance will be discussed. The interaction of genes and gene products are illustrated by the examination of the molecular genetics of development. The application of genomics to the study of genetic variation, molecular evolution and gene function in humans and model organisms is also described. In the practical sessions students investigate the genetics of a variety of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms in order to illustrate concepts covered in the lecture material. Students develop familiarity and competence with equipment used in molecular genetic analysis, bioinformatics, microscopy, and statistical tests.

Course Description
This course examines physiological interactions between organisms and their environments. It explores evolutionary processes that allow animals to persist in variable environments. These concepts are essential to understanding biodiversity and ecological function of animal populations, and how these are likely to change under future climate change. The course is suitable for those with an interest in zoology, as well as students with a particular interest in ecology and evolution. There is a strong focus on experimental biology and incorporating theory into practical classes, during which students design their own experiments. The course provides essential skills for conducting and presenting research, and for critical evaluation of published research.

Course Description
This course examines urban environments from the dual perspectives of citizenship and sustainability. The course has three parts. The first part examines the intersection of urban environmental change with questions of citizenship and justice. Part two considers key urban environmental issues such as energy, transport and food, and how cities and citizens might address stresses and shocks in these systems. Part three studies new models for governing emergent urban environmental challenges. Throughout the semester, a practical project involves a research project with real-world partners to introduce key skills related to working in collaboration with external organizations.

Course Description

This course examines three philosophical schools: the Stoics, the Epicureans, and the Skeptics. It covers topics including: rival ethical systems, and arguments attempting to derive ethical standards from nature; philosophy as a way of life, and one entailing a radical break from conventional values; Epicurean atomic theory, Stoic determinism, and the development of the free will problem; the Stoic view that emotions should be eliminated; and Skeptical arguments that our entire perception of our world may be nothing more than a dream. It also considers recent revivals of these theories and connections with contemporary culture and philosophy.
