Course Description
This course provides a broad overview of Christianity, both Catholicism and Protestantism, in Korea. It focuses on their introduction, reactions from traditional Confucian Korean society, and the roles played by Western missionaries, particularly their contributions to the nation`s modernization. Korea has one of the most diverse and dynamic religious cultures of any nation in the world today. However, Korea also witnessed a very turbulent history in building a modern democratic nation-state. In this context, Korean Christian Churches and Christians have made great contributions to developing their nation, ranging from participating in independence movements and democratization to developing women`s education and social status. Starting from the encounters between Choson and the Jesuits, this course surveys how Catholicism and Protestantism have influenced Korea and what challenges they are facing now. Lastly, this course examines the history of Yonsei University and Severance Hospital as illustrative examples of the contributions the Western missionaries have made to Korean education and medicine.

Course Description

This course presents a practical approach (based on Excel examples) to understand the principles of management science and to apply them to business decision problems. Developing models of practical decision-making problems and solving them using Excel Solver, one learns how important and useful the scientific decision making process based on management science is for solving problems in real-world business applications. Focusing on management science modeling skills, this course covers linear programming, simplex method, sensitivity analysis, transportation models, integer programming, and others (if time permitted). Students learn the fundamental knowledge and analytical skills in management science. Management science (also called Operations research) combines the three broad disciplines of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Business Applications. This course aims to develop the ideas of developing, analyzing, and validating mathematical models for decision problems, and their systematic solution. Course Description

This course examines how to write for an authentic audience, and first person narratives that move people`s minds and hearts. The course begins with literacy narratives, learning how they work and how writing our own can expose our own assumptions and tendencies about writing in English. Then, the course covers the genre of the Personal Statement or Statement of Purpose, not as a "template" but as a means to get to know ourselves deeply in order to communicate our best selves persuasively. It covers how to read like a writer and apply that learning to our own writing. By the end of the course, students will have written, through multiple drafts, two first person essays: a literacy narrative and a statement of purpose, following the guidelines of the graduate program of their choice. This is a writing intensive course.

Prerequisite: Writing 1 or Writing 2 or ideally, BOTH. It is assumed that you have already taken a writing class at the university level.
