This course offers a study of the risks arising from climatic, hydrological, and internal and external geodynamic and biological processes. It discusses the social repercussions of extreme events, the approach to preventative and mitigation measures, and the response of land use planning. This course analyzes extreme episodes of natural and associated risks including the extent to which they are influenced by direct anthropic intervention in the biophysical environmental and by the variability of natural factors.

The course uses 20th-century Latin American literature to explore the history and culture of the period; it examines the different literary trends, aesthetic conceptions and expressive techniques, both in narrative and poetic expression. Individual topics and texts studied vary by semester and can include any of the following: the history of literary movements; the ideological construction of space; the relationship between literature and politics; the role of women in culture; the building of Latin American identity, gender issues, realism and the different approaches to reality; relationship between Latin America and other regions of the world; the fantastic in Latin American literature, etc.
