Course Description
This paper introduces probability theory and the mathematical theory of statistics. It covers mathematical concepts and theory that underpin the statistical distributions, inference and important results in statistics. This course is almost entirely mathematical in nature. The first half starts with a rigorous introduction to probability theory. Topics include the axioms of probability, conditional probability and independence, random variables, discrete distributions, continuous distributions, expectations and variances, and special distributions. In the second half, building upon the tools and background in the first half, more advanced topics are studied, such as convergence of random variables, moment generating functions, characteristic functions, and their applications to the foundational results in mathematical statistics; namely the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem. If time permits additional topics such as maximum likelihood theory may be covered.

Course Description

This course examines the study of how organisms on land interact with each other and the environment. It covers a number of major concepts in terrestrial ecology, from how communities are locally structured to global patterns in species diversity. It also covers how ecological theory informs the conservation and restoration of degraded ecosystems using both international and New Zealand examples.

Course Description
This course examines fiction written in all corners of the globe within the last ten years. It explores how literature has responded to a world where countries, peoples, and cultures are increasingly interconnected through travel, immigration, the Internet, and major issues - from terrorism to climate change to international politics - that affect us and force us to act on a global level. It examines questions of race, nation, globalization, gender, transnationalism, and "world Englishes."

Course Description

This course examines a range of metaphysical questions that relate to our everyday lives. These include questions like: what is a border; what is a person; what are race and gender; do fictional characters like Sherlock Holmes exist; does it even make sense to ask which things (really) exist and what do we mean when we ask this sort of question; how is metaphysics related to cognitive science; how should you respond when members of another culture have different metaphysical beliefs than you do; are the concepts that we use to ask metaphysical questions the concepts that we should be using; and should we try to construct new concepts, and if so, how should we do that?

Course Description
Our lives are dominated by images and by visual technologies that allow local and global communication of information and ideas. In an increasingly visual world, how do we best decipher and understand the many ways that our everyday lives are organized around looking practices? In what ways are we affected by the many images that we encounter? How do we impression manage our identity with images? Images are used to represent our worlds real, imagined, or possible. They can be trivial, profound, persuasive, confronting or disturbing. Some images possess a universal appeal while some are censored for their (perceived) harm. This course seeks to cover visual texts in the broadest sense, ranging from drawings, paintings, photographs, moko, film and television, to new media forms. It constitutes a key first step in learning to utilize the image by beginning to understand how they work and their impact and influence on us. It also draws on a broad range of theories that deepen understanding of images and guide image creation and manipulation.

Course Description
This course explores concepts, techniques, and structures central to dynamic creative non-fiction, examining these elements in action through close analysis of selected texts. Intensive workshop exercises then stimulate the student to apply these discoveries to their own writing, challenging them to experiment with aspects of creative non-fiction through direct engagement with the page. Work-in-progress generated by these exercises is regularly presented for constructive critique within class, producing a portfolio for final assessment.
