Course Description
This course provides a solid grounding in key themes relating to the study of Tamil culture and society. It emphasizes historical and social variation in the exploration of Tamil world(s). The course explores a variety of texts and visual media relating to articulations of ‘Tamilness' across time and space in order to arrive at a nuanced understanding of how Tamil culture and society are represented, shaped, and reproduced by scholarly articles, Tamil popular cinema, and literature. They can look forward to gaining critical perspectives on processes of identity formation, social hierarchies and institutions, politics, war, and everyday life, all of which will be taught with reference to Tamil contexts, but which equally lend themselves to better appreciating culture and the contestations that it engenders in the world as we know it today.

Course Description
This course focuses on the emergence of that famous eighteenth-century form: the novel. The course provides a firm grasp on what Henry James called that “large loose baggy monster” by tracing its development from the early fiction of the late seventeenth century to the relatively refined novels of Jane Austen. We will also read the novel through a variety historical and theoretical lenses ranging from the rise of literacy and the middle class to the confinement and empowerment of women in a newly configured domestic sphere to the eighteenth-century appetite for news and facts. Finally, close attention is paid to the novel's experiments with form and its characteristic features in order to understand how the novel enabled a new concept of the modern individual.

Course Description

This course highlights how luck has influenced and still influences several aspects of the world we live in. From the beginning of the universe, to our present-day lives, to the end of the universe, random events beyond anyone's control continue to shape our fate. By exploring the various fields that luck manifests itself in, the course ultimately delves into the intriguingly precarious nature of existence.

Course Description

Public health nutrition is concerned with the promotion and maintenance of nutrition-related health and wellbeing of populations through the organized efforts and informed choices of society. Such approaches are required to solve many of the complex nutritional challenges, such as obesity, type-2 diabetes, micronutrient deficiencies, and hunger, which we face today. This class examines the fundamental concepts related to nutrition, frameworks used to examine public health issues, and key historical and current public health nutrition challenges and policies.

Course Description
The course takes us from the origins of the Indochinese conflicts in the colonial period, through the open wars of the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s, to their legacies in today's diasporic communities. In addition to a core text, a variety of first-person accounts written by anyone from revolutionary leaders to foot soldiers to children to doctors to Buddhist monks are read. The objective is to see the wars from multiple perspectives and to investigate how first-person narratives may complement, complicate, or even contest orthodox accounts. Readings: Each week there will be two types of readings, each serving a different purpose. The “background” reading provides general context for the period, while the “narrative” readings give us a more personal view on the issue or period. Most background readings are taken from Christopher Goscha's fantastic new history of Vietnam, and I encourage you all to buy a copy. All readings for the module are uploaded in PDF format to IVLE. Assessment: Participation, journal, annotated bibliography, objective account, personal account.

Course Description
Social networks are here to stay and will have increasing impact in our society and life. Through a wide variety of social network platforms, users are actively communicating with friends and strangers on a wide variety of topics; sharing all kinds of information ranging from text, photos, videos and venue check-ins; following activities of others, and commenting on each other's posts. This ushers in a new era of communications that involves complex user relationships, and new modes of information exchanges. The ability to understand the complex exchanges in such social networks and their implications to society is thus very important. This course introduces the technical aspects of this problem to cover the techniques of analyzing the complex social relation networks between users, the contents they shared, and the ways contents and events propagate through the social networks. The analysis provides better understanding of the concerns and interests of users, and uncovers live and emerging events that affect the community. The social network to be studied include microblogs sites like Twitter, social communication sites like Facebook, location sharing sites like 4Square, photo sharing sites like Instagram and Flicker, as well as forums and blogs.

From low frequency minute vibrations to infrasonic and ultrasonic frequencies, from waterborne to air-transmitted sounds, this course introduces what sound is (i.e. fundamentals of sound, how sound travels etc.), how and why it matters to animals (i.e. mechanisms and adaptive functions of sound production and reception) in both terrestrial and marine habitats, bioacoustic instrumentation and software, industrial applications, and how environmental issues involving sounds such as terrestrial and ocean noise pollution are affecting animals and humans.
