Course Description
This course adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of tourism and leisure, exploring in detail the economic, social, cultural, and geographic implications of tourism on physical and human landscapes. Tourism is presented here as a powerful agent of change at the local level and as the product of changes on the global scale. This theme is substantiated with concepts, models, and theories drawn from the social sciences as well as from geography, and with empirical case studies from the Asia-Pacific. The course enhances awareness of the integral links between tourism and contemporary society and the way tourism may be harnessed by different societies to maximize economic benefits while minimizing environmental and cultural degradation.

Course Description

This course offers an opportunity to grapple with some of the most enduring challenges to human thought. The starting point is a conception of ourselves as free and conscious beings equipped with bodies that allow us to observe and explore a familiar external world. Successive lectures investigate alternative conceptions of the human condition, such as ones in which we are unfree, or non-spirituous, or inhabit a world whose fundamental nature is hidden from our view. Different conceptions bear differently on the further question of what we should value and why. Discussion is both argument-driven and historically informed. Assessment: attendance, quizzes, final exam.
