Course Description
To study culture, we need to read books, visit historical sites, and talk to one another. Can we complement these approaches with IT tools? This digital humanities course teaches basic web design to create digital archives and dip our toes into some computational tools to study culture. But isn't it controversial to use data science to study culture? Can you reduce the diversity, and complexity of human culture to number and graphs? Assessment: Individual project, group project, and presentation, participation.

Course Description

This course explores the basic relationships between the diverse forms and functions in plants. Each plant group shares a common basic structural plan but contains many members that deviate from the basic plan in response to selection pressures from the environment. Knowledge of organismal biology is enhanced through selected topics in morpho-anatomical designs and functional adaptions.

Course Description
This studio course has various sections. Students choose one of the platforms to focus on. As a progression from the design fundamentals, this course aggregates all the prior lessons into one complete, coherent, industrially-relevant project where students learn to manage, and go through the whole process of 1) initial design research and market research, to 2) formulating the design strategy and 3) design brief, through to 4) conceptualization, 5) evaluation phases, and 6) detailing and refinement. The design is aimed for a specific context which includes specific users, market scenarios, environments, trends, business / competition, and feasibility / manufacturing factors. Critical consideration for sustainability factors is incorporated as part of the context criteria. Students must do both ARCH 115 A and 115 B.

Course Description
This course is an introduction to the anthropology of the arts. In contrast to art history and art criticism, anthropology takes art as fundamentally social. Indeed, art is a slippery category, and, rather than making ontological claims about its status (“what is art?”), anthropologists are more concerned with understanding its geographically and historically contingent meanings. Through a selection of readings and case studies, the course addresses what it means to study the arts anthropologically, and how such an approach might be applied across formal and informal settings, ranging from museums and galleries to everyday social life.
