Course Description

In this course students review and master elementary Japanese grammar and sentence patterns and develop a well-balanced lower intermediate level proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students learn the 50 most important sentence patterns of the intermediate level, master 3000 basic words and 600 to 750 kanji. They read short written passages on various topics that consist of sentence patterns, grammar and new vocabulary, make speeches on topics familiar to them, and write well-organized passages.

Course Description

This course presents styles of speech appropriate in various situations in Japanese society and develops oral communication skills mainly through role playing. It teaches the differences between formal and informal oral expression, proper words and phrases to use in a formal setting, polite body language, and nonverbal signals. Through pair and group work, students become able to express their thoughts clearly and efficiently as well as to listen to and comprehend others' opinions and expectations. They also practice pronunciation including Japanese sounds, rhythm, accent, and intonation. 

Note: Intermediate Japanese language levels at the host university are comparable to UC upper-division language courses.

Course Description

This course improves lower advanced level listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It introduces the 50 most important sentence patterns for advanced level students and reviews the important sentence patterns from the intermediate level. Course Description

This course provides essential skills to write college-level reports approximately 1,500 words in length in Japanese.
