This course analyzes issues of curriculum and education systems. The course enables students to discuss, interpret, and analyze key features of Scottish curricula, curricular design, and educational systems and at least two other national education systems. Topics include social, political, economic, technological, religious, and cultural factors on the formulation and conduct of educational policy.

This course introduces students to key topics in the broad area of social cognition. The course demonstrates the social cognitive processes involved in aspects of healthy psychology and evaluates the social cognitive features of human attraction. Students examine how social cognition varies with culture and analyze how social cognitive processes affect internal thought monitoring.

This course examines the diverse ways in which the society and military of the United States were affected by developments in nuclear technology during the early decades of the Cold War, in terms of such aspects as culture, protest, race, gender, civil defense, commercialization, energy, spaceflight, warfare, and international relations. Students use a range of both publicly available and declassified sources, from written documents to film clips, to explore the early postwar visions of an atomic-powered future and the lasting impact of their ideas on modern America.

This 4th year honors course introduces students to a range of Shakespearean adaptations for the stage (including, for example, post-colonial, feminist, and queer adaptations). It explores the relationship between adaptation and source text(s) and between text and context, as well as considering the key critical and theoretical discourses surrounding Shakespearean appropriations and the practice of adaptation; although the focus is primarily on stage adaptations, students may have the opportunity to look at adaptations in other media too.

The course develops a sound knowledge and critical understanding of the academic disciplines of sociology and social anthropology. To pursue these aims, the course builds on knowledge gained in order to develop a more systematic and theoretical grasp of the disciplines of sociology and social anthropology as well as their contribution to the critical understanding of society; examines critically the analytical frameworks of classical and contemporary social theories; provides an adequate context for understanding different theoretical perspectives in sociology and anthropology; enables students to enhance their transferable and inter-personal skills, particularly in communication, time management, individual and group research work, and critical appraisal of social issues.

This course provides students with the opportunity to study the literary period known as "modernism" via engagement with the concept of sexual difference; investigate the textual and contextual manifestations of the concern with gender in the period; engage with contemporary and current theories of sexuality and relevant critical debates; develop and practice advanced research and writing skills; and engage in independent and group learning.

This course develops the principles of stress and strain in three dimensions and illustrates the 2D plane stress and plane strain states as special cases of the 3D scenario. Stress and strain transformations in 3D and 2D are studied and special stresses and strains such as principal stresses and strains in 3D, etc. are discussed. Equilibrium, compatibility, and constitutive relationships are developed. Experimental stress analysis is treated in conjunction with laboratory exercises and the course concludes with a treatment of yield criteria and plasticity including assessment of the likelihood of failure in practical stress analysis scenarios such as in members undergoing combined bending and torsion and in pressure vessels.

This course highlights the significance of consumption as a major form of social life, analyzes the nature and historical development of contemporary consumer society, outlines the various configurations of consumption in modern society, and also analyzes the social forces which exist to regulate and control them.

The course provides a critical and global comparative analysis of the role that religion plays in shaping population movements and migrants' lived experiences. Correspondingly it evaluates how religious traditions and practices are themselves transformed through the processes of movement, displacement, and migration. The course pays particular attention to how carriers of religion in motion – actors (e.g., migrants, pilgrims, and professionals), objects, rituals, ideas, and technologies – move and cluster within and across national boundaries as well as being attentive to the transnational spaces, networks, and organizations which drive religious movement. It explores what happens at the sites of encounter and attention is paid to contemporary debates about, and techniques intended to, govern religious diversity and difference. The course invites students to rethink taken for granted assumptions about religion as a stable set of beliefs and practices, and the view that considers religious life as situated within contained spaces (e.g., congregations and nation-states). It thus encourages a more historicized, contextualized, and lived understanding of religions across borders which pays attention to the role of power and resistance, drawing on empirical material from both the global South and the global North, and from numerous different faith traditions.

This course explores the knowledge and skills necessary to write programs in the C programming language. This foundation is extended to encompass the construction of larger programs with emphasis on adhering to the specification when writing modules of larger programs.
