Course Description
This course considers the end of the modern European empires and the resulting postcolonial contexts. It looks at debates within postcolonial studies around the effects and consequences of empire, including the ways the imperial world created diasporas and migrant populations which have profoundly shaped contemporary identities, and at discussion over recent forms of imperialism, and public debates in Britain about the legacies and memorialization of the imperial past. Students examine debates over the ending of formal empires in the 20th century, the crises of postcolonial nationalism, and the forms of imperialism which have emerged since. The course considers both historical and theoretical discussion of these questions, and it offers a critical introduction to aspects of postcolonial theory as a specific body of scholarly work.

Course Description
This course provides students with the ability to apply the principles of engineering mechanics to determine elastic behavior of members and components subjected to bending moment, shear force, axial force, and torque, including elastic deflections of beams (statically determinate and statically indeterminate) and torsion of circular and thin-walled sections. Behavior of beams is also extended to simple cases of plastic-bending behavior.
