Course Description

This course is designed to teach students to communicate effectively in Jordanian dialect. It introduces words, expressions, and structures used frequently in everyday life, as well as the Jordanian culture and how to successfully interact with locals. The course practices separating the fundamental grammatical structure of colloquial Arabic from that of Modern Standard Arabic; managing daily life in Jordan in colloquial dialect; distinguishing different accents of Jordanian colloquial dialect; and developing appropriate cultural inferences.

Course Description

This course complements the competency of Modern Standard Arabic achieved in previous studies. This course covers chapters 15 to 20 of AL-KITAAB FII TA'ALLUM AL-ARABIYYA: PART ONE, which forms the basis of instruction in all four Modern Standard Arabic skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It practices reading and writing paragraphs and applying new words in conversation; describing and analyzing events, such as describing an excursion or cultural event; engaging in a conversation and discussions; applying Arabic grammatical rules in writing and conversations; and discussing listening passages.

Course Description

Course Description

This course is for students with no or minimal knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic. The course begins with an introduction to the sounds and script of the language using the text ALIF-BAA. Following the introduction to sounds and script, the course uses AL-KITAAB PART ONE 3RD EDITION up to chapter 5 as its major textbook. Students are exposed to authentic reading materials, learn to speak at the survival level, give oral presentations, and prepare short written assignments.

Course Description

This course is designed for students to learn to communicate effectively in Jordanian colloquial Arabic. It introduces words, expressions, and structures used frequently in everyday life, as well as various aspects of Jordanian culture and society through the study of the language. The course practices recall of simple simple Arabic words for basic communication; expressing oneself using basic conjugations of Arabic colloquial verbs; completing basic daily interactions using Jordanian colloquial Arabic such as taking a taxi; and discussing the weather, food, clothing, and cultural customs and traditions in Jordan.

Course Description

This course complements the competency of Modern Standard Arabic achieved in previous studies of Arabic. There are local materials, where students will use Arabic to read and discuss relevant topics in Jordan. Attention is paid to the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. During the course, students become familiar with major aspects of the Jordan culture and many traditions related to Jordan in general. The course practices arguing the main ideas of a listening passage and discussing them in the class; expressing oneself verbally without mistakes in different situations using a language comprehensible for native speakers; formulating opinions on news articles or books and discussing issues related to Jordan, climate, economy, and culture; writing a diary and creating text on social, cultural, and political issues of Jordan and the Middle East; distinguishing between words in relation to position in the sentence, applying different grammatical structures, and distinguishing between them including changes in the meaning.

Course Description

This course provides a systematic overview of the major components of Arab society and culture, covering four major sections: Overview of Arab Society and culture, History and Culture, Nationalities and Culture, and Politics and culture.

The course will guide students to read first-hand classical literature in multiple languages including Arabic, English, French and Chinese, master Arabic philosophy, history, society, ethnicity, religion, population, customs, political thoughts and social trends, watch representative documentaries and original videos of Arabic. And meet and communicate with Arabic speakers from different social backgrounds and countries.

Course Description
Arabic Level Three: Fourth Semester Arabic- Fall B2. At the end of this level, students have acquired the following within comprehension skills: Listening comprehension, can understand announcements and everyday messages spoken at a normal speed; a good part of what is said in a long conversation; an animated conversation between native speakers; the main ideas of a television or radio program, a documentary, identify the point of view and the mood of the speaker, the main ideas of a relatively complex presentation provided that the topic is fairly familiar to me and the outline of the presentation is indicated by explicit markers, and elements of a discussion in dialectal Arabic; Reading comprehension: can understand relatively complex texts, written in modern language (press, literature, other) with the help of a dictionary, sensitive to the difference in the register of language between texts or linguistic situations of a different nature: press reports/analytical articles; an economic / literary topic; a conversation between students / television debate between politicians, etc.; spoken expression: can communicate and interact, despite hesitation and mistakes by participating in relatively long conversations with native speakers, by stating point of view and feelings, by interviewing a person or by being interviewed, by having a simple discussion in dialect, can produce a clear and well-argued presentation, a clear and detailed description on a known subject, the narrative of a story or of an event in a more detailed and elaborate way than at the previous level, expressing feelings or a personal opinion, elementary statements for practical needs in dialectal Arabic; written expression, can write summaries (text, information, film, presentation), detailed texts on subjects related to my interests, giving the reasons for or against a particular opinion, a synthesis of various documents dealing with the same subject. Also covered are syntax (conditional sentences, exceptive sentences, exclamatory sentences), and morphology (The jussive [al-majzûm], the imperative, assimilated verbs [al-mithâl], final weak defective verbs [al-nâqis], doubled verbs [al-muda‘‘af / al-'asamm], diptotes). Other concepts in syntax and in morphology are studied in context, according to the teaching materials used. The aim is not to study Arabic grammar in a systematic and exhaustive manner, but rather to clarify certain points according to needs.

Course Description
The course introduces students to the phonology and script of Modern Standard Arabic and covers the basic morphology and syntax of the written language. Emphasis is placed on the development of the four (reading, listening, speaking and writing) skills at the earliest stages. The various aspects of modern Moroccan culture and society provides contexts for the language learning process. In addition to classroom instruction time, students in the Beginning II level course are expected to participate in content-based learning activities. These activities further students' exposure to Modern Standard Arabic and allow for greater retention of new vocabulary. These activities are graded on a participation basis and include workshops, excursions, and group discussions.
