Course Description

This course teaches basic Chinese vocabulary used in a business environment. The class is limited to students who are capable of more than 1500 Chinese vocabulary or have taken Chinese classes for more than 800 hours (which equals to finishing the textbook Practical Audio-Visual Chinese II). The textbook used for this class is Far East Business Chinese (L.1~7). This class is taught only in Chinese.

Course Description
Folk literature, unlike written literature, is a special literary style carried by oral language which plays irreplaceable role in daily life. This course gives an overview of the basic theories of the folk literature, as well as the classical oral literary works popular with various social classes. Topics include concept and basic characteristics of folklore literature; concept and characteristics of mythology; content and catalog of Chinese folktale; two-part allegorical saying, proverb and riddle; and content and catalog of folk long poem.

Course Description
This basic Chinese language course provides the equivalent of the remainder (second semester) of level A1.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The linguistic contents (graphics, phonological, lexical and morphosyntactic) are presented in a simple and gradual way, always associated with communicative situations. Topics include: phonology (reinforcement of vocal and consonant system, tones, Pinyin phonetic transcription); writing (formation and stroke order of new characters); grammar (nominal classifiers, nominal suffixes, numerals, transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, modal verbs, etc.); basic lexicon applied to everyday situations.

This course may only be taken in conjunction with the Beginning Cantonese course (CLCC1113) An elementary course with a focus on fluency in basic vocabulary and grammar points through various kinds of speaking practice. The lectures are organized as introductions to the history and culture of ancient and modern Chinese dialects: geographical distribution, common ancestors of distinct linguistic systems and their relationships, ancient breakdown of major dialect groups, modern Chinese dialects and their characters (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation), and finally touching on current cultural issues.
