Course Description

This course may only be taken in conjunction with the Beginning Cantonese course (CLCC1113) An elementary course with a focus on fluency in basic vocabulary and grammar points through various kinds of speaking practice. Real life settings are introduced such as shopping, introducing family members, asking directions etc. Assessment: student performance (25%), quizzes (50%), and final exam (25%).

Course Description
This basic Chinese language course offers the equivalent of level A1.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The linguistic contents (graphics, phonological, lexical and morphosyntactic) are presented in a simple and gradual way, always associated with communicative situations. Topics include: phonology (vocal and consonant system, tones, Pinyin phonetic transcription); writing (character classes, strokes); grammar (personal pronouns, classifiers, nominal suffixes, numerals, transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, modal verbs, etc.); basic lexicon applied to everyday situations.

Course Description

The lectures are organized as introductions to the history and culture of ancient and modern Chinese dialects: geographical distribution, common ancestors of distinct linguistic systems and their relationships, ancient breakdown of major dialect groups, modern Chinese dialects and their characters (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation), and finally touching on current cultural issues. Assessment: final exam and a final group presentation.

Course Description

This is an advanced Chinese language class focusing on developing strong literary skills (both reading and writing). The class is based on a variety of topics selected from articles in various Chinese magazines. Those articles are analyzed and discussed during class, with particular attention given to style, effective use of language, and argumentation. Homework and assignments always involved writing responsive essays to the main article and frequently included individual research on news stories related to the weekly topic in order to develop more compelling arguments.

Course Description

This intensive course is designed for foreign learners who have completed CHIN9511 (Beginning Cantonese I) or who can demonstrate equivalent competence in the placement test. Students strengthen their mastery of the phonetic romanization transcription, the Jyutping system, and gain enhanced competence in expression in the language. The course introduces more practical sentence patterns and a large range of useful words and expressions related to various aspects of life.

Course Description
This course is for students to learn intermediate-level Chinese (grade 2-3 of the HSK proficiency test or 3-4 class level). The main aim is to improve listening skills by hearing a lot of basic examples. Through HSK-style exercises, students familiarize themselves with the HSK test format. The first and last lessons include a simulated HSK grade-3 test as an indicator of each student's progress. Each lesson also includes a vocabulary quiz. Text: "CHUGOKUO LISTENING DOJO" by Masahiro Endo et al. published from Asahi Shuppan. Assessment: class attendance, participation, and a final exam.
