Course Description
This course critically focuses on structural issues of development on a global scale. Globalization refers to the increasing interdependence of markets, states and civil societies and the resulting effects on people and their environment. By also focusing on inequality, the structural differentiation among actors in terms of access to means, opportunities and resources, issues of (re-)distribution are taken into account as well. The course investigates inequalities and interdependencies on a global, international, national and local level, while considering the role of public, private, and civil society actors. Thus, it aims to understand the underlying development processes and unlock the ongoing debates. The course focuses on the following themes: globalization and development; the global goals for sustainable development; a history of inequality; the agencies of development; democratization, human rights and development; health and development; global migration and remittances; and food security, natural resources, and global crises.

Course Description
The course begins with an analysis of the historical and philosophical concepts of development and humanitarianism. It examines the history of the emergence of a global development and humanitarian "industry" and considers assumptions and power dynamics that underpin understandings of how these actors operate in the globalized world. Students examine the historical relationship between the media and responses to humanitarian crises, its affect on the development of new media technologies, and the practical applications of digital media technologies when responding to disasters. Students considers broader strategies of socioeconomic development across the world, the impact of technologies of the network society for macroeconomic growth, and how new media tools potentially facilitate market inclusion. The course also discusses how digital connectivity can lead to positive social change, empowerment, or new forms of contestation.

Course Description
This module focuses on the contemporary urban geographical debate and deals with phenomena such as gentrification, segregation, social polarization and social exclusion. These processes have occurred over a long time, but their nature has changed in connection with the ongoing de-industrialization, the growth of a service economy, and increased international migration. With a background knowledge of these developments students are trained to review the contemporary debate in urban geographical issues. The literature consists partly of classical texts within the urban geographical field and partly of central present-day texts.
