Course Description

The course reviews agglomeration and clustering of economic activities from both geographical and urban economics disciplinary perspectives, in relation to cluster and urban economic policy. The course explains the current innovative and knowledge economy of firms and policymaking in relation to urban competitiveness. The geographical discipline focuses on clusters, network formation and industry evolution using institutional theories in which the actor-approach of firms and governments is central. Urban economics traditionally focuses on the role of externalities and urban contexts as attractions for firm and population location decisions and the growth and innovation potentials of firms in a more quantitative sense. Both disciplines heavily lean on empirical research, using complementary research methods like case-study research, surveys, spatial econometrics and general equilibrium modelling. Those methods are explained in the course in relation to current issues and empirical research on urban development. Much attention is given to regional and urban economic policy issues. Participants apply the theoretical and empirical insights from the lectures in an actual case study of urban policy in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Course Description
This course provides students with the basics about the global climate system. It covers climate variations and climatological processes and how those affects the global and local climate. During the course students consider the global and regional climatology and what causes the largescale differences in the energy budget. Topics covered include: are the different components of the global climate system; the physical characteristics and the chemical composition of the atmosphere; the global and regional energy flows in the atmosphere. Students also learn about the general atmospheric circulation and the coupling between oceans and atmosphere with its role in the energy exchange. After this course students have an improved understanding of: the components affecting the energy balance of the atmosphere on different spatial- and time scales the relationship between the composition of weather-systems and their variations; natural and antropogenetic causes to variation in weather; basic climatological analysis methods; how to adapt and evaluate climate analysis to environmental and social applications.

Course Description
The course explores cultural, political economic, pragmatic, and technocratic perspectives used to explain and sometimes spawn hazardousness of everyday life. Students learn that hazards are not accidental interruptions of "normal" life but rather integral to the social geographies that modern societies have produced. The integrative concept of "hazardscapes" are introduced to capture the discursive and material aspects of environmental and social hazards. Hazardous environments in both the rich and the poorer parts of the world are critically evaluated from multiple theoretical perspectives to formulate strategies for enhancing human safety and environmental quality.

Course Description
This module focuses on the contemporary urban geographical debate and deals with phenomena such as gentrification, segregation, social polarization and social exclusion. These processes have occurred over a long time, but their nature has changed in connection with the ongoing de-industrialization, the growth of a service economy, and increased international migration. With a background knowledge of these developments students are trained to review the contemporary debate in urban geographical issues. The literature consists partly of classical texts within the urban geographical field and partly of central present-day texts.
