Course Description
This course focuses on the physical and social development of the city of Dublin. While some time is taken at the beginning of the course to examine the early development of the city, the main emphasis is on the period from about 1680 to 1950. The course looks at the city from a variety of perspectives not necessarily following a chronological pathway. There is an emphasis on understanding how the forces and processes of the time were made manifest in the streets and urban landscape of the city. It is important to understand Dublin in its European context and to see it as the unique expression of common processes. A background in urban geography is useful for this course. Previous coursework in European urbanization is particularly helpful.

It emphasizes the geopolitical and cultural backdrops to development amid debates about globalization, international trade, and investment. It introduces the distinctive identity of economic geography then focuses on broad structural and regulatory processes, asking how they shape the uneven development of economic landscapes across space, and on key structures of economic life: the capitalist system, governments, firms, and technology. The course also examines the various processes that organize the economy (the trans-national corporation, labor's power in the economy, commodity chains); and explores economic lives, bringing in dimensions of culture, gender, and ethnicity in understanding the spatial organization of economic activity.

Course Description

There are more than 750 million people living on islands, from the densely populated urban centers of the Philippines and Hawaii’s to the atolls and archipelagos of the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, and Indian Ocean. Climate change is a global challenge that requires locally designed interventions and action. Islands are at the front line of the effects of climate change. Key challenges: rising temperature and sea levels, lack of fresh water supply, plastic pollution, sewage blockages, high number of tourists in season time, and dependence on fossil fuels imports and high prices. This course provides an understanding of the relationships between human needs and resource use under different climatic scenarios with focus on islands. Students draw on practical case studies, analyze possible solutions, and explore ways to inform decision-makers and the general public.
