This is a beginning language course for students with no prior knowledge of the language. This is an integrated course that will help students achieve novice proficiency in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), grammar and vocabulary (including Hangul, the Korean alphabet) for personal interaction and communication in authentic situations.

This is the first semester of advanced Korean, and is designed to advance students to greater strengths in oral communication competences and linguistic knowledge of Korean. Students read selected texts related to daily life, society, culture, nature and other common topics. It aims to help students achieve high levels of proficiency not only in interpersonal but also in presentational communication.

Assessment: Attendance & Participation (20%), Assignments (30%), Speaking Assessment (30%), Take-home Achievement Assessment (20%)

Prerequisite: Intermediate Korean (2) or equivalent

This course provides a study of Korean famous prose written in Chinese characters. Intellectual and historical Korean writing is based on Chinese Characters. The course focuses on reading and exploring prose in the original language. However, since students may not be familiar with Chinese characters, the lecture focuses on reading the original text, but also exploring the text’s originality.

Through an integrated curriculum of vocabulary, grammar, speaking, listening, writing, and reading, this course enables students to: 

1) Communicate in Korean at an intermediate level; 
2) Converse in Korean on the various range of topics including school life, health, hospital, making a reservation, etc.; and,

3) Have conversations using indirect speech appropriately.

This is an advanced Korean language course where students learn to communicate effectively, fluently, and accurately on specialized and abstract topics. In this course, students learn vocabulary and expressions at an advanced level as well as how to communicate abstract subjects such as politics, economics, and history.

This is an advanced Korean language course. Students can communicate fluently using Korean grammar and expressions in various contexts; understand Korean way of thinking through various types of Korean materials containing various sources of Korean society and culture. This course is to achieve academic Korean language ability. Upon completion of the courses, students should be able to take university courses taught in Korean. 

The course instructs students on how to form good sentences using basic vocabulary, expression, and grammar in situations they will encounter in their daily lives.

Through an integrated curriculum of vocabulary, grammar, speaking, listening, writing, and reading, this course enables students to: 

1) Communicate in Korean in formal discourse;

2) Converse in Korean at an intermediate level on a wide range of topics including environment, problems and solutions; asking and rejecting; thanking, apologizing, etc; and,

3) Understand metaphorical expressions, idioms, sayings in Korean.

This course teaches foreign students the following low-mid level skills for Korean: ability to comprehend university-level lectures and class presentations; ability to make a note for lectures; ability to make an answer for essay questions; and, ability to conduct low-mid level everyday conversation. Students learn a variety of colloquial expressions commonly used in university-level lectures, useful expressions for lecture notes, and skills for making an answer for essay questions. By using audiovisual materials, students can improve their ability to conduct everyday conversation in Korean.
