Course Description

The course examines the basic theory of matrix and linear equations, including: concept, property and computation of determinants; operation of matrices; special matrices; inverse matrix; rank and elementary transformation; judgment and structure of solutions; linear relations of vectors; concept and property of eigenvalues and eigenvectors; conditions of a matrix similar to a diagonal matrix; methods to decide the sign of quadratic form; and an application on optimization.

Course Description
This course provides a general introduction to quantitative research methods commonly used in social and life sciences. Emphasis is on methods of data collection and types of data, descriptive statistics, regression modeling, discrete and continuous random variables, and inferential statistics: the construction of confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, null and alternative hypotheses, p-values. The structure of the course is based on a new paradigm in teaching statistics: that of a simulation and randomization based approach. This instructional principle departs from the classical statistics curriculum of first covering descriptive statistics, next discuss probability theory and models of random variables, continue with sampling theory, to deal with inferential statistics only in the very end of the course. Randomization-based courses make a drastic change, and start with inferential statistics from the very beginning. Next, an important role in this course is for the student project. This project starts in the first weeks, with students working with surveys, and in doing so, collecting data on student characteristics, such as mathematical and statistical prior knowledge, meta-cognitive abilities and general study styles and habits. Students perform a statistical analysis of their own data, and after collecting the data of all students, they develop a statistical model that explains students' achievements in terms of background variables and input factors. Prerequisites for the course are a basic mathematics course.

Course Description
Information and communication processes in social systems and support of these processes by means of ICT are key topics in the field of information science. These processes are studied from both a scientific and a design perspective. To this end, it is important that students have an understanding of scientific methods and research and data analysis. In this module, students learn which research method to use, which methods for analysis go with it, and how to report the results. The course follows the empirical cycle: problem formulation; various research methods; different methods of analysis; description of results and reporting. In addition to knowledge about various methods of scientific research, attention is paid to basic knowledge of inferential statistics, and how to work with the statistical software package SPSS.

Course Description

This course introduces the use of mathematics as an effective tool in solving real-world problems through mathematical modeling and analytical and/or numerical computations. By using examples in physical, engineering, biological, and social sciences, real-world problems are converted into mathematical equations through proper assumptions and physical laws. The course provides qualitative analysis and analytical solutions for some models to interpret and explain qualitative and quantitative phenomena of the real-world problems. Major topics: introduction of modeling; dynamic (or ODE) models: population models, pendulum motion; electrical networks, chemical reaction; optimization and discrete models: profit of company and annuity; probability models: president election poll and random walk; model analysis: dimensional analysis, equilibrium and stability, bifurcation; and some typical applications. The course requires students to take prerequisites.

Course Description
This course gives insight into theory and algorithms for fundamental mathematical problems associated with systems of equations, optimization, and approximation of functions. There are many applications, for example, the representation of geometry, images, and more generally large data sets. Applications in various areas of the natural sciences are an essential part of the course. This subject assumes familiarity with linear algebra and calculus of several variables. The course discusses topics including important numerical methods; strategies both for constructing methods and analyzing them, often with the help of linear algebra; the limitations of various mathematical approximations and the effect of computer rounding errors; concrete methods for solving various kinds of equation systems and non-linear optimization problems; and methods for approximating functions with the help of simpler functions, such as polynomials, piecewise polynomials, and trigonometric functions.
