Course Description
In this course, students develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish in a range of predictable situations and contexts; interact in a simple way orally and in writing with a sympathetic speaker of Spanish; develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as asking for repetition or clarification; use Spanish to reinforce their knowledge of other disciplines; acquire linguistics skills, tools, and knowledge to become independent life-long learners by using Spanish for target academic activities and personal enrichment; and develop an insight into the nature of language, culture, and society, and a greater degree of intercultural competence.

This course examines the trans-Atlantic variants of Spanish, as well as their linguistic characteristics conferred through contact, as important features of the identity of communities which use Spanish in their daily communication.
