Course Description
This elective seminar provides a study of the application of musical concepts to the study and analysis of poetry. Rhythm, meter, and melody, typical to the field of music theory, are applied to historical and contemporary Spanish-language poetry. The course also examines the ways in which traditional Spanish music, as well as music across the Hispanic diaspora, employs the same literary and musical concepts as poetry. Course Description
This course provides an overview of medieval Spanish literature that include romances of chivalry, lyrics, traditional ballads, and medieval theatre. The course covers the 12th and 13th centuries, emphasizing EL POEMA DEL CID. Other works covered in the course may include Paloma Diaz's ROMANCERO, Juan Manuel's AMADIS DE AGULA, Juan Ruiz's EL LIBRO DEL AMOR, Jorge Manrique's COPLAS A LA MUERTE DE MI PADRE, Diego de San Pedro's CARCEL DE AMOR, and Marques de Santillana's EL INFIERNO DE LOS ENAMORADOS. Assessment is based on assigned readings, 2-3 page written reports, and one final exam.

This course provides a critical analysis of the literary creations of the Andean world (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina) from pre-Hispanic civilization to the present. It compares different visions of the universe, religious beliefs, family connections, and literary tastes from Andean myths, legends, stories, theater, novels, and lyrics. Course Description
This course offers a panoramic vision of the history and culture of Spain through the presentation of short texts and significant works of architecture and painting. It covers fundamental concepts and ideas that are key to the historical, sociological and anthropological development of all layers of Spanish population and helped construct contemporary Spanish society. Instruction is divided between the classroom and the various museums of Madrid, presented chronologically from pre-Roman Spain to the present with visits to the Archeological Museum, the Prado, the Academy of Fine Arts, the Reina Sofia Center for the Arts, as well as the Madrid of the Austrias and the Madrid of the Bourbons. Assessment for the course is based on attendance and participation, several short compositions, and two short-answer exams.
