This five-week intensive summer course is intended for advanced heritage language learners -- students who have native or near-native language skills in Spanish -- who have had some formal instruction in the language. It concentrates on improving students' ability to write academic Spanish. It requires heavy assignments of written work and the review and correction of assignments based on extensive, detailed comments by the instructor.

It examines the interrelationship of urban, demographic, economic, social, political, and cultural factors and how they have shaped contemporary Madrid society.

Students focus on contextualized vocabulary and grammatical structures useful in communication of health-related issues. Examples from the areas of community development, public health, and social interaction provide the basis to expand the analytical and conversational skills of the participants.

The course covers the study of semantics, focusing on the meaning of words and expressions in Spanish from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. Students explore lexical meaning, ambiguity, semantic relationships, cognitive semantics, and mechanisms of semantic change, while developing vocabulary, sentence construction, and critical reflection on the Spanish language.

Since January 1993, Ciudad Juárez has stood out for the high number of murdered women. It is at the beginning of this decade and in this city that the term "femicide" is generated: the violent death of women due to machismo or misogyny. Through different texts and media students investigate different aspects of this issue, as well as terminology, machismo, the economy, and drug trafficking in Mexico.

This course is designed for UCEAP students at the advanced (C2) level and/or heritage Spanish speakers to improve, consolidate, and expand grammatical knowledge of the Spanish language. Class meetings are supplemented with practical experiences where students visit emblematic locations in Madrid to practice Spanish communication in real time.
