Course Description
Urban Design introduces the visual, spatial, social and design dimensions in planning for public spaces. Urban Design for People and Places examines how a city’s built form, function and structure is shaped by its interaction with multidimensional forces – including the physical, technological, cultural, social, economic, and environmental –to create a public life which continuously shapes and is shaped by both people’s activities and the places they inhabit. It explores a broad range of concepts, theories, principles, and processes to frame the urban design practice – developing, proposing and negotiating creative urban design solutions to address urban issues in a dynamic setting.

Course Description
This course delves into the human aspects of urban locations that embody contrasts and contradictions, and it analyzes social, economic, and political processes in cities of the Global South. Students discuss connections and tensions between urban communities and economic development, the creation of vulnerable populations through urbanization and the precariousness of labor, the structural failures of slum ecologies and how they affect people, but also how citizens nevertheless find uncountable modes of making the city their home. The course examines the articulation of neo-liberalism in urban space, the consequences of international debt and structural adjustment projects in “megacities”, and looks at how cities are hubs for moving people (most often women) to other places to make a living in the service industries – domestic labor, sex work, cleaning jobs. Furthermore, it examines the opportunities these cities represent: as spaces of creativity, new mélanges of identities, new cultural forms and novel cultural, economic, social and political prospects. Prerequisites for the course include a course on globalization and inequality or sustainable development.

Course Description

This course is an interdisciplinary course that explores the relationship between art and architecture through visits to London’s famous museums, art galleries, public artworks, and iconic architecture. Students analyze the impact architecture has on viewing art with seminars which take place in some of London’s most famous museums and galleries such as the British Museum, Tate Modern, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. The course then consider alternatives to this model, including more recent curatorial phenomena by organizations such as ArtAngel which commission contemporary artists to make artworks in unexpected places: from a performance in an abandoned Underground station to a concrete cast of an entire house. Through the lens of specific case studies of art and architecture, the course examines relevant critical issues such as race, globalization, and environmental justice. In doing so, students interrogate how urban circumstances have shaped issues in modern and contemporary art and architecture in London.
