Statements on the US Capitol insurrection
The University of California and the UC Education Abroad Program have released statements on the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
University of California President Michael V. Drake, MD, issued the following statement on January 7, 2021, condemning the failed insurrection at the US Capitol building:
The orderly transfer of power has been a hallmark of our American democracy for more than two centuries. The shocking display of lawless violence in the nation’s capital on January 6 was a horrific, and ultimately tragic, affront to our national dignity. The University of California cherishes the free speech right of the people “peaceably to assemble” to share their grievances. But that is not what occurred in Washington, DC, yesterday. We must stand together—regardless of political party or point of view—to condemn the violence on January 6, 2021, and to uphold, protect and defend our bedrock values.
UCEAP Statement
The pictures of the insurrection at the US Capitol—including the participants and the destruction they wrought—cannot be easily forgotten.
In response, UCEAP resolves to advance equitable and truthful education of the public, to uplift those in the UCEAP community who need assistance, and to communicate the expectation that government officials address national problems with truth, fairness, moral courage, and a commitment to engage in meaningful dialogue with their colleagues.
UCEAP will redouble efforts to facilitate students’ exposure to different people, different ideas, and different ways of being—to expand the boundaries of their experience as a first step in cultivating respect, understanding, and empathy for others. Study abroad will expose students to a world that is larger than themselves and more inclusive.
We invite you to join us in making a positive impact in our community and to use our collective voice to speak out against violence.
