About The Program
Ideal for biology, particularly marine biology, and environmental studies majors, this program offers an exciting and interactive experience in marine science and environmental conservation. Students of all abilities are welcome; there are no swimming requirements to participate in this program. Courses are held at the University of Waikato’s newest campus, Tauranga on the North Island. Coursework will focus on the newly established marine protected area in the Bay of Plenty and includes field trips, laboratory work, and seminars by expert researchers. Immerse yourself in a relaxed beach style environment and study at a coastal marine station on the leading edge of environmental discovery and monitoring, as well as coastal and marine research.
WHERE YOU'LL STUDY
The University of Waikato has two campuses: Hamilton and Tauranga. The main campus is Hamilton, at the edge of Hamilton city and the newest campus, Tauranga, is in the region of the Bay of Plenty at the edge of the North Island. The smaller Tauranga campus has a relaxed beach style, and the coastal marine station leads environmental monitoring and coastal and marine research in the region. Its location in Tauranga enhances the student experience, providing access to a coastal city and a short drive to the golden beaches of Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa. Staff and faculty at the coastal marine station integrate Māori knowledge and collaborate with iwi for environmental understanding. A free Kaimai Shuttle runs between the Tauranga and Hamilton campuses during teaching periods and is available to students, keeping everyone well connected to the Waikato whānau (family).
