Course Description

This course examines the basic principles and basic procedures of social survey methods. Using the general process of social surveys as the layout logic and small research projects, it introduces survey design, measurement, questionnaire design, survey sampling, data collection, data processing, statistical software application and statistical analysis preparation, data statistical analysis, survey report writing, and method selection.

Course Description

This course introduces the origin and development of Chinese Buddhism. It describes the main schools of Chinese Buddhism and the lives and thoughts of important thinkers. This course introduces the basic ideas of Indian Buddhism and the general process of its introduction into China. It provides an analysis of two important works in the early history of Chinese Buddhism: Zhao Lun and Awakening of Faith in the Mahayana, the main sects of Sui and Tang Dynasty Buddhism (Sanlun, Tiantai, Weishi, Huayan , Pure Land, Zen)’s main works and thoughts.

Course Description

The Introduction to Environmental History is characterized by its depth of time and space. From the Pleistocene of about 2.5 million years ago to 11,000 years ago, the course traces back to Anthropocene from the 18th century to the present. The course not only discusses the evolution of homo sapiens, but also how the interaction between the species and the environment creates the so-called "civilization". There is also discussion on how these "civilized" Homo sapiens descend in the eighteenth century Industrialization, and even the establishment of capitalism, which drastically changed the Earth's environment, so that the current geologists into whether or not to "human world" included in the formal geological age of the debate. In the context of archeology and historical geography, the Introduction to Environmental History invites fellow students to reflect on the past of man as a species, and to think about whether or not we need - or need - a common future in the end.

Course Description

This course examines the major issues of global urban planning and governance of Chinese global cities such as Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Beijing with reference to New York, London, and Tokyo. It looks at the structure and institutions of urban government; efficiency/democracy/distribution/developmental goals; types of public policy; urban self-governance and its limits; inter-governmental conflict/competition/cooperation; privatization/partnership/governance grid; theories of pluralism/elitism; metropolitan government school/public choice theory/neo-regionalism/zonal restructuring; economic growth; industrial development; infrastructure; spatial planning; growth machines; urban limits; urban mechanisms; neo-Marxism; the historical institutional school; regulation; developmental state; citizenship and civic participation; neighborhoods and communities; urban social movements; social capital; gender and migration; and political parties and interest groups.

Course Description
This course teaches the history of Chinese characters, the use of radicals, methods of guessing characters, and other intricacies of Chinese character writing. The course teaches more than 804 Chinese characters, including certain patterns in Chinese characters such as common sounds, meanings behind certain radicals, and how to guess at unknown characters through the use of tools taught in class. Text: Dasui Li, CHINESE CHARACTERS, A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH. Assessment: homework (20%), midterm exam (40%), final exam (40%).

Course Description

Through the training of theatrical performances, the course cultivates sentiments and enhances artistic accomplishment. This course is an art practice class based on the curriculum offered at the Film Director Department, Shanghai Academy of Arts. Combined with the popular performance workshop training model of European and American drama teaching, this course aims to improve the performance and expression skills for students who are interested in performing arts. Course Description

The course has four main focuses. It begins with an overview of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry with introduction on the biotech-pharmaceutical industry, market overview, and aspects of drug development. Second, the course offers an introduction of drug development focusing on small-molecule drug/anticancer drug, drug development and translational research, antibody and plant drug development, and immunotherapy. The third section is on research and development: preclinical, focusing on animal application, pharmacokinetics, pre-formulation and formulation development of new drugs, clinical trials, small molecule drug development. The final section covers industry business outline focusing on the biotech industry, biomedical research, development of patent protection, biotech economy.
