Course Description

This course introduces the scale of action taken by local authorities in France, and the political nature of the financial choices that accompany these interventions. Explaining the constraints to which the territorial public sector is subject, both institutionally and financially, and analyzing the reforms undertaken by the State lead to reflection on what decentralization represents in France today and how it is evolving. Learning outcomes include understanding the prospects for the evolution of territorial action in France, comparing this situation with other international models of territorial organization, and reflecting on the present and future role of local authorities in environmental transition policies, and how their financial choices may or may not contribute to this.

Course Description
This course covers how the recent notion of solidarity economy takes shape in the societies of sub-Saharan Africa. For this, it is important to know the general principles of solidarity economics as well as the geography of Africa for the purpose of identifying different manifestations of this notion in different areas of the continent. Thus, the course is focused on understanding the vitality and diversity of solidarity initiatives across thematic studies which illuminate territories and geographic spaces in which they are found. The other objective is to provide a range of readings of logics and perspectives in which these practices of solidarity economics can be understood.

Course Description
The first part of this course analyzes how traditions and values are communicated and transfer between different generations (Gen Z, Gen Y, Gen X, and Baby Boomers). The course analyzes how generational differences (uses of technology, access to media, family formation) influence each generation's willingness to break or continue traditions. The course then covers gender trends in intergenerational communication and what woman and men value or disregard more from one generation to another. As a final project, students are required to interview three men and three women from a specific demographic group (low income, ethnicity, single parent homes, etc.) and analyze the difference between men and woman's intention to pass on or omit their families' (parents or grandparents) traditions. After analyzing the data, students write a 12- to 15-page paper about the differences found, why this difference may occur (based on lectures and readings), and whether this difference is significant or coherent with outside resources. The second half of the course follows a political approach to the role of media and communications within the world today. This course is taught in two parts, students can take part 1, part 2, or both parts.
