Course Description
No economic system is attributed so much rationality and at the same time so much emotion as capitalism. The critics of capitalism attribute negative feelings to its detractors, such as greed. Its advocates, in contrast, attempt to evoke positive feelings such as happiness and joy among consumers and employees alike. The seminar addresses this area of tension by asking about the fundamental role of emotions in capitalism. The first part of the seminar deals with the historical foundations of capitalism and asks from an economic, academic, and emotional perspective for the importance of feelings in the literature on capitalism. The second part of the seminar focuses on linking the historical perspective to current discussions, and on the basis of capitalism-critical sources, illuminating the question of whether areas of society are shaped by emotional practices that actually or supposedly correspond to the economics of capitalism.

Course Description
In this course, students work together to conduct an explorative case study, in which they capture and contextualize explanatory approaches for understanding socially constructed differences of dirt and cleanliness in different Berlin areas. While it seems easy to explain at first sight (less passers-by and lower population density in the Grunewald villa quarter), many questions are raised on closer inspection. Can't the city cleaning and local politics compensate for a higher population density, or don't they want to? And who is considered to be responsible for causing dirt or eliminating it? In application of social research methods, students conduct an independent research project in this course, from the development of the exact research question to the operationalization of variables to the presentation of the results. Students do their own field research in Berlin to collect empirical material (through interviews, participant observations, etc.), and they also evaluate media reports. The results are made public at the end of the semester, for example in the form of a symposium, an article, a podcast or a small exhibition. Prerequisite for participation is theoretical prior knowledge in qualitative methods of social research.

Course Description
The platform is the dominant business model of digitization. The most successful companies in the world like Google, Amazon or Facebook, but also many tech startups, are platforms. However, the often acclaimed model brings with it a series of problematic developments: the undermining of labor standards, economic concentration of power and monopolization, new threats to privacy and autonomy. The class first takes a theoretical approach to this topic and then examines alternative concepts and case studies. Finally, students develop their own project ideas. These can range from ideas for a platform cooperative to alternative data governance concepts all the way to new strategies for industrial action and social movements.
