Course Description
This course provides an overview of the Sunni-Shia relationships since the death of the Prophet Muhammad when the question of succession was raised, until today. The question of succession gave birth to two different –and sometimes rivaling– conceptions of the prophetic message as well as political power: the Caliphate supported by the Sunnis-to-be, and the Imamate, supported by Ali's family and followers, later called Shia Muslims. The Sunni-Shia relationships impact the geopolitics of the Middle East but are also shaped by the regional geopolitics. The purpose of this seminar is to take a critical approach in order to understand that the Sunni-Shia divisions also take place in particular political and regional contexts, and to go beyond a strictly confessional reading of geopolitical issues in the Middle East.

Course Description
Since the late eighteenth century, thousands of African Americans have travelled to Africa. The scope of African American history is revealed in the variety of those who have made the journey, from manumitted slaves to poets and Peace Corps volunteers. Over the years, black travelers have found their way to every corner of the continent. Focusing mostly on twentieth century African American travelers to Africa, the course studies their journeys and the ways in which Africa was seen in many different ways: a “dark continent” crying out for civilization, a headquarters for anticolonial revolution, a field of opportunities for entrepreneurs, most often a clue to the meaning of their own history. The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the global importance of Africa.

Course Description

This course focuses on the crisis of democratic politics in Europe, placing it in the wider context of the evolution of postwar democracy, as well as seeking to build accounts of our present politics. It develops a refined understanding of democratic politics in Europe, introducing academic accounts of party democracy, technocracy, and populism, and deploying them in the context of postwar European history. In so doing, this course enriches the understanding of commonly deployed notions and concepts for the purpose of contemporaneous political analysis, rendering more clearly both the disjunctures and continuities of Europe's Democratic Age.

Course Description

From a political science perspective, this course investigates the stark material inequalities that exist between countries and world regions. It covers the transnational political-economy processes that shape inequalities within and between countries, including perspectives on the winners and losers of global trade, the deregulation of global finance, the precarity created along global production chains, tax evasion of multinational companies, migration, and the rise of global tech companies. The course reflects on the consequences of these processes for areas such as democracy, gender relations, and climate change.
