Course Description
This course concentrates on the ethnographic study of Japanese popular culture. Relevant concepts, theories, analytical perspectives and approaches to the sociocultural meanings of popular expressive behaviors in Japan are introduced in reference with prominent case studies. Backgrounds in anthropology and sociology in general, and specifically ethnography and/or qualitative research methods, are useful, but are not required. The course examines such topics as popular artistry, entertainment business and media industry with a greater understanding of the sociocultural significance.

Course Description

This course presents the history and main current characteristics of the Japanese legal system. The first part of the course presents the historical background of the Japanese legal system, focusing on the reception of Western law in the Meiji period and on the consolidation of the legal system in the 20th century. The second part presents several key aspects of current Japanese constitutional law, private law, criminal law, and procedure. The course may include a field trip to an institution of law covered during the semester.

Course Description

This course provides an overview of contemporary Japanese politics via Public (Rational) Choice Theory which emphasizes major political actors such as voters, parliamentarians, special interest groups, and national bureaucrats. This class describes and discusses some of the basic aspects of Japanese politics, currently undergoing a drastic transformation due to societal changes and globalization. The course covers the following topics: Public (Rational) Choice Theory, along with its strengths and weaknesses; democracy in Japan; party politics; the electoral system and voting participation; Japan's population issues; Japan's defense and foreign policy; Japan's food and energy problems, and current topics in Japanese politics and foreign policy.

Course Description

This course explores the philosophy and politics of food and agriculture from international and comparative perspectives. It examines global food systems; their role in the transformation of agrarian societies, and their environmental effects. The political portion of the course focuses on governance, development, and the role of key institutions in shaping food systems. The philosophical portion of the course explores the values underlying food and agriculture in the United States and Japan, along with efforts to develop more just and sustainable food systems. The course also discusses genetically modified plants, food safety, agricultural intensification/Industrialization.

Why is our human mind and behavior in the present form? What is different from and similar to the 'mind' and behavior of non-human animals? This course provides basic knowledge to investigate this big question of the evolutionary origin of human mind and behavior from biological viewpoints. Lectures mainly consist of non-human animal studies at the various levels of biology (ex. cellular biology, brain evolution, comparative psychology, and behavioral ecology).

This course reviews and masters elementary Japanese grammar and sentence patterns and develops a well-balanced lower intermediate level proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students learn the 50 most important sentence patterns of the intermediate level, master 3000 basic words and 600 to 750 kanji.
