Course Description
This class explores important aspects of East Asian political culture. What are the similarities and differences in attitudes between citizens in East Asian societies and other parts of the world? Have so-called 'Asian values' affected political, economic, and social outcomes? Do processes of modernization-induced value change in other advanced industrialized countries apply to East Asia? And to what extent can we speak of a common East Asian identity? Lectures and discussions in this course are focused on these questions.

This course presents the basic theory of distribution and analyzes the problems that modern distribution contains with a focus on Japan. The course examines the basic theory of distribution and to understand the actual situation and problems of Japanese distribution industry. Topics include: wholesale and exclusion logic, outsourcing, retail and retail development, chain stores, department stores, Evolution Hypothesis, Dialectic Hypothesis, Retail Wheel Hypothesis, Vacuum Zone Hypothesis.

Urbanizationin in the developing countries is often being washed by the waves of internationalization, and a characteristic of this is thought to be a loss of the sense of traditional territoriality. This course analyzes the relationship between urbanization and Chinese international migration. The lectures is in Chinese but available reference materials include those in English and Japanese. Course Description
This course examines the field of international relations. It assumes both a theoretical and empirical approach, and is being organized around three core themes: international relations theory; history, in our case, the Cold War; and post-Cold War power issues in international affairs. Theories discussed include realism, liberalism, Marxism and critical theory, and post-structuralism. Cold War topics include from containment to division; from division to deterrence; from deterrence to collapse. Other topics include peace and security and religion and identity.

Course Description

This course examines the history of social movements in Japan from the 1940s to the 1990s. By focusing on the formation and transformation of “good citizenship” in the political discourse of postwar Japan, and by introducing several key Japanese intellectuals’ discourses on democracy and modernity, the class discusses how political ideas have affected the social process, especially in the attempt of re-establishing the relationship between the private sphere and the public sphere.

Course Description

This is a Japanese language course for non-JLP students designed for students learning Japanese for the first time. The aim of the course is to obtain oral communication skills utilizing basic vocabulary and sentence structure as well as enhance basic listening and speaking skills.
