This course considers the thoughts and way of life during the Edo period, focusing on the ideas of the samurai. The course provides an opportunity for students to improve their Japanese reading ability by reading classical Japanese literature.

This basic Japanese course chooses a different theme concerning Japanese culture and society to discuss each week. Students are split into groups to engage in activities, discussion, and group work concerning the selected topic. The goal of the class is for students to widen their perspectives and deepen their knowledge regarding various issues related to Japan and Japanese society. The program offers various theme courses and students may take multiple sections.

The course provides an overview of the Chinese economy: Chinese economic history; the rise of the Chinese private sector; pressing economic issues; the financial system, and economic relationships with other countries in the globalized economy. etc. The course consists of lectures, interactive discussion, real case studies, and presentations.

This course explores how organizational change, albeit necessary and difficult, should be managed. It discusses organizational change from various angles such as leadership, organizational structure, job design, organizational culture, etc.
The course examines Japanese and British case studies to see how organizations handle hardship in change management.
Students are expected to develop critical thinking of the theories introduced for each respective theme as well as to articulate their own original ideas to manage barriers to organizational change.

This beginners Chinese course aims to develop the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. It instructs on the basics of the language as well as cultural knowledge to begin communicating in Chinese. Students with some knowledge of the language are welcome.
The course aims to provide students with:
- Familiarity with the sounds and pronunciation of Chinese;
- Simple conversation skills about everyday topics, including self-introduction;
- Acquisition of basic Chinese vocabulary, sentence structure, basic grammar, etc.; and,
- Ability to read short sentences
COURSE DETAIL
This course introduces game theory and its application to political science. Students study game theory through the concepts of Nash Equilibrium, Subgame Perfect Equilibrium, and Perfect Bayesian Equilibrium, as well as strategic-form, extensive-form, and repeated games. Sessions involve presenting (and practicing) game-theoretic techniques before applying them to specific political science questions.
Although there is no prerequisite knowledge for this class, it may be helpful to have taken at least a course in statistics or probability theory.

The course is designed to expand kanji and vocabulary at low intermediate level and increase vocabulary written in kanji.

This course enhances communication skills focusing on interview, discussions and debate. The goal is "to communicate without reading," and by summarizing each activity in a conversational format, students are trained to listen carefully to what the other person is saying; confirm what they are saying, and naturally respond by agree or disagreeing. The second half of the course develops the ability to speak at paragraph level with reasons and specific examples, while expanding vocabulary, to state one's opinions.
Note: Intermediate Japanese language levels at the host university are comparable to UC upper-division language courses.

This course studies basic concepts of applied animal and dairy science, covering the following topics: comparative physiology, anatomy, nutrition, genetics, reproduction, animal product, immunology, microbiology, environment biology, and animal behavior.
