Course Description
This course explores the diversity of microorganisms, their cellular biology, growth and nutrition, metabolism, and basic genetics. The role of microorganism in disease, as well as their ecology and applications in biotechnology is also examined. Insight into the immune response to infection is gained by studying the innate, humoral and cellular immune systems and their functions in health and disease. The practical component of the course includes laboratory experiments to demonstrate principles learned in the lectures, where students will gain practical skills in safely handling microbial cultures for isolation and identification.

Course Description
This course studies the development, implementation and evaluation of public, and to a lesser extent, non-government policies in pursuit of conservation objectives. We ask what is good policy? Policy development occurs in a social arena of contending rights and interests, beliefs and viewpoints. What are the social, economic and political conditions that either aid or impede the development of good conservation policy? In particular, we delve into the Australian political and governmental system to understand the context within which conservation policy develops and changes. At the international level we study major conservation conventions, the history of development of conservation concepts, institutions, programs and agreements, in particular the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), World Heritage, RAMSAR and CITES. We compare Australia with some of our Asia Pacific neighbors in how national policy frameworks respond to the same CBD commitments.

Course Description
This course explores what we mean by modernity and its relationship to technology and mass culture. It examines the history of the European and American avant-garde from the mid-nineteenth century to the 1960s by locating artistic production in the context of photography, mechanical reproduction, cinema, advertising, consumerism, and life in the modern metropolis. The coruse also investigates the ways in which artists drew on technologies, popular culture, and mass media to celebrate and critique modernity and problematize conventional approaches to artistic production, gender norms, and subjective experience. Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, Dada, Pop and the Neo-Avant-Garde are some of the movements discussed. Students look at a range of modern and modernist visual artefacts, from paintings and sculpture to the photograph, the illustrated magazine, the silent movie, the avant-garde journal and the animated film.

Course Description
This course provides a well-rounded coverage of the field of animal behavior from physiological, ecological and evolutionary perspectives. The course expects the critical evaluation of concepts and information introduced in lectures and the textbook, and to critically read primary scientific literature. Contact sessions provide training in how to carry out independent research in this field. Students carry out a semester-long independent project in small groups of 4 students. Groups plan their projects and write a formal research proposal (group assignment), then carry out the projects, analyze their data, and each student then produces a poster on the project, to be presented in poster sessions at the end of the semester (individual assignment). This contributes to half of the assessment in this course.
