Course Description

Immunology focuses on the role of different humoral factors, cells and cell systems of the innate and adaptive immune system, that are involved in the defense of an organism against intruders like foreign cells or non-complex structures such as foreign proteins. Processes in the immune response after immunization, vaccination, and transplantation are discussed. Prerequisites knowledge in Introduction to Biology is required.

Course Description
This course seeks to place the study of HIV/AIDS in Africa in a medical anthropological perspective, enabling students to understand and analyze how the AIDS epidemic in Africa is part of broader societal developments, but also how the AIDS epidemic has affected broader societal development in Africa. By contextualizing AIDS in people's everyday lives, the course studies how people live and die with the disease and in doing so, it critically examines public health interventions. Students are encouraged to locate AIDS historically, locating interventions addressed to combat its spread within a specific political and ideological timeframe. While it still uses several readings from other disciplines than medical anthropology, students must take note that this is not an interdisciplinary course, its core approach forms medical anthropology. The course still includes reflection on the value of the various knowledge that different disciplines produce about AIDS in Africa. Students are expected to apply their acquired knowledge and insights from literature and class, to contemporary case-studies that highlight the complexity of AIDS, and to identify the ways anthropological research can contribute to public health interventions designed to combat the disease. Students also read one ethnography of choice on AIDS in Africa and write a review of this ethnography.

Course Description
Real estate is a major asset class in institutional investors' portfolios. In general these investors get equity exposure through the stock market, so their exposure to the underlying assets (oil wells, factories, human capital) is indirect. In real estate, this is different. Institutional investors often buy and own the real estate assets directly. Understanding the investment and valuation process in real properties is therefore essential for an institutional real estate investor, but also for real estate advisors, bankers, and property developers. This course teaches students how they can apply the financial knowledge they have acquired to real-life property investment situations, using international investment cases that are rooted in reality.

Course Description

The course is divided into four parts. In the first part of the course students gain an overview of the most important theories, techniques, and methods used by psychologists in the context of personality and intelligence research. What are common conceptualizations of personality and intelligence? Secondly, students learn about antecedents or explanations of individual differences. Why are there differences between humans? How does evolution come into play? What role does heredity play? In the third part, students focus on outcomes of personality in terms of life experiences. What is the role of personality and intelligence in the prediction of life events? How important is intelligence for your career? Do personality traits predict the duration of a marriage? In the fourth part, students focus on applications of personality theory and findings in practice. How is knowledge on personality and intelligence applied in clinical and organizational settings? What kind of practical implications can be derived from personality research?

Course Description
This course examines how migration has shaped the modern world. Most of the focus is dedicated to what has occurred since the 1800s. The course starts in week 1 by looking at the various theories put forward to explain why people migrate and what effect this has for the sender communities, the receiver communities, and for migrants themselves. It then turns to more empirical examples of migration. Each week a different type of movement is examined. One weekly seminar is dedicated to an historical case study, while the other weekly seminar focuses on a more contemporary case study on a related type of movement. Topics covered include slavery, colonial and post-colonial migration, labor migration, internal migration, and asylum. Due to the global nature of the course, texts include studies concerning Africa, North America, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, the Middle East, the Gulf States and Australia. Through this course, students are enabled to consider contemporary migration debates from historical perspectives.

Course Description
This course introduces students to the economics of industrial organization. The field of industrial organization is concerned with how firms compete with each other in a variety of market structures and how this affects their performance, their customers, and the welfare of society at large. It developed as a separate discipline in the United States in the 1930's and takes as its starting point that competition in the market place is often imperfect. Moreover, it takes a broad perspective on the nature of competition by considering industry rivalry along both price and non-price dimensions. Examples of the latter include product positioning, advertising, and research and development. The implied strategic firm behavior can have far-reaching welfare consequences and gives rise to important policy questions. The course considers the government's responsibility to intervene in a market that is controlled by a single powerful enterprise. There are different schools of thought in industrial economics; each with its own view on the workings of markets. In this course, students learn about this variety of viewpoints and the corresponding policy recommendations. Prerequisites for this course are first-year microeconomics and first-year statistical methods.
