Course Description
This seminar-style class surveys a volume of literature that highlights the analytical tools economists use to analyze industrial organization (i.e., how firms and markets interact). Topics include competition and monopoly, market structure, mergers, game theory, development of theory, price discrimination, product differentiation, advertising, vertical integration and relationships, oligopoly behavior, antitrust, industrial organization, and regulation and deregulation. The course emphasizes how to write and present outlines of complex literature and how to write literature reviews at a high level. ASSESSMENT: attendance (10%), participation (5%) ,outlines and presentations (15%), term papers (70%).

This course is an examination of the history of Islam as it relates to governments and international relations. It presents the role of Islam in global politics and Islam as a vehicle for political mobilization. Course Description
This course provides a study of the historical background and development of countries in Southeast Asia before World War II. Using a historic perspective combined with social sciences techniques, the course covers Southeast Asia's development from the earliest civilizations up to the Pacific War of 1941, the general pattern of its development, and the reasons behind the current state of affairs in the region. Topics include arrival of world religions, rise of classical states, age of commerce, warfare, early colonial regimes, gender and slavery, economic transformations, reform and westernization, World War I, anti-colonialism and nationalism, and the emergence of nations.

This course provides an exploration of modern China through the analysis of Chinese-language films from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, paying special attention to how these films represent China's social, culture, and political thought. Topics include fifth generation Chinese filmmakers; Cultural Revolution in cinema; representations of women, men, and LGBTIQ; gender politics; postmodernism and post colonialism; ambiguous identity of Taiwan cinema; Thailand in Chinese cinema; and Chinese in Hollywood movies.
