Course Description
This course explores, evaluates, and uses concepts and theories to analyze and explain the functioning of markets and economies in the context of the global financial crises of the late 2000s and early 2010s. The global and local financial crises have challenged our understanding of economics and markets. Orthodox economic models contributed to the emergence of crises and our inability to understand and address the consequences in a timely way. This course explores the lessons of the global financial crisis for markets in money, credit, and banking. The course also considers other contemporary economic issues that have emerged as critical for economy and society post-crisis, including income and wealth inequality, globalization, migration and capital flows, and the economics of climate change. The course uses resources from the CORE project in new economic thinking.

Course Description
This course analyzes the dominant features of decolonization as a historical phenomenon that continues to mark much of the contemporary world. Through a close examination of the history of pre- and post-independence Algeria up to the present, students assess the nature of revolution, nation-building, contemporary Islamism, and the Arab Spring. In doing this, the course explores the interrelationship between the ideas, practices, and politics of decolonization, revolution, and their post-colonial legacies - both political and cultural.
