Course Description

This course gives an introduction to methods of pharmaceutical analysis, which utilizes chromatographic, spectroscopic, and electroanalytical techniques to determine the structure and purity of medicinal compounds. Topics include analytical methods for characterizing pharmaceutical solids, AA Spectroscopy in pharmaceutical analysis, extraction of organic and inorganic analytes from aqueous solution, spectroscopic techniques, and complementary techniques to determine the structure and purity of a pharmaceutical compound.

This is a survey course in modern Irish history from the mid-19th century to the present. Topics include the Great Famine (1845-1852); emigration during and after the Famine; the politics of post-Famine Ireland; the Irish revolutionary tradition; the Irish democratic tradition; cultural politics in 19th and 20th-century Ireland; the history of food and material culture in Ireland; and Northern Ireland.

Course Description

Arguably, no events had a greater impact on Irish history than the Great Famine. This course explores the social and economic conditions that led to famine, the way the Famine unfolded in Ireland, state and individual responses to the crisis, the experience of eviction and emigration, and the way the Famine’s memory shaped Irish identity and nationalism in the latter half of the 19th century.

Course Description
This course develops students’ understanding of the relationship between literature and society in the 18th century. The texts included are drawn from different periods in the 18th century and from a variety of genres, which may include the novel and poetry. Special attention is given to the rise of the novel form, to changes in poetic and literary models, and subsequent changes in notions of literature, authorship, and literary meaning. The course also focuses on questions of class, gender, ideology, and nation in relation to literary texts.

Course Description

The course introduces students to the early literature of the Celtic countries (which is studied in translation). This course deals with the early heroic literature of the Celtic countries, with a focus on Irish texts from the Ulster Cycle and in particular on Táin Bó Cúailnge, THE CATTLE-RAID OF COOLEY, the most important extant epic from medieval Ireland.
