Beginning prior to WWII, the course examines how new design emerged as its own discipline in the United States. Course Description
This course furnishes the necessary elements for understanding cities and their development. It delineates the diverse aspects of cities and the large phases in urban spaces and societies. This includes the origins of cities and the large cycles of urbanization up until recent turns (nineteenth and twentieth centuries). This includes both physical aspects as well as social ones. This course focuses on: archeology and ancient cities in Mesopotamia and Mediterranean; the cities from the middle age until the eighteenth century, including colonialism; the nineteenth century and industrialization; housing and urban development.

This course focuses on the history of writing, storytelling, and books. It begins with the first signs of writing known to man, then explores the evolution of the creation of writing and what is known as a book today. The course studies the different methods used to create written works and includes guided visits to the printing museum. The first part of the course focuses on the global history of writing, and the second part of the course concentrates on the history and evolution of writing in France.

This course focuses on art and architecture during modern period in Italy, France, Greece, Spain and other European countries It compares flamboyant Gothic with Modern Gothic, and identifies Classicalism and Mannerism. The course studies the invention of Rococo style and Renaissance in Italy, France, and the Flanders. It also examines the stylistic differences and similarities between regions such as France and Italy. The course covers the historical context of the Renaissance and the influences from artists of the previous art period. It also focuses on the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian, and Tintoretto. Students acquire vocabularies and languages of architecture in this class.
