Course Description
This course covers the principles and applications of geochemistry and petrology to igneous systems. Basic principles of geochemistry and geochronology precede discussions of planetary accretion, the mantle, magma genesis and evolution, magmatic ore systems, and volcanic systems/volcanology. This course uses a process-based approach, examining magmatic systems in the context of the global (or planetary) environment in which they form, with particular emphasis given to subduction zone, mid-ocean ridge and ocean-island magmatism. This course then focuses on the evolution and modification of primary magmas as they transit the crust, including magmatic ore deposits, and the effect of magmas on volcanic processes and products.

Course Description
This course outlines field methods in archaeology through practical experience and theoretical investigation. It covers theoretical underpinnings for the field methods employed and the legislative framework for archaeological practice in New Zealand and globally. It requires students to engage with literature on key issues in New Zealand archaeology and methodological debate relevant to your case study. Students use the Ahuahu Great Mercury Island archaeological project as the data set for their case studies. The assessment for the course is designed to reflect the research process of archaeology. Students submit a final piece of writing as though they would submit it to a peer-reviewed academic journal and present it at a conference.

Course Description
This course provides an introduction to the diversity of the invertebrates, giving an understanding of the characteristics that distinguish the phyla, and the relationships between them in the "Tree of Life". The course explores the biology of invertebrates with an emphasis on structure, function, life histories, behavior and ecology. Invertebrate diversity is examined in a variety of environments, using New Zealand examples where possible, and provides the basis for advanced courses in conservation and marine ecology.

Course Description
This is an advanced course that critically examines sedimentary systems from the mineral to basin scale. Reconstruction of sedimentary environments utilizes a multi-proxy approach, incorporating facies analysis, taxonomy, paleoecology, taphonomy, geostatistics and sequence stratigraphy. Real-life case studies also show how hydrocarbon systems work in a sedimentary system context. A one-day field trip to One Tree Point and a series of lab exercises are used for in-depth class research projects, and hands-on experience of sedimentological research. Given that 75% of exposed rocks on Earth’s surface are sedimentary in composition, the ability to interpret them is significant for any practicing Earth Scientist. This advanced course uses research-led teaching to critically examine an array of ancient sedimentary environments from the geologic record.
