Course Description
This course examines the contemporary topics that shape the ways in which environmental science may be communicated and understood. Topics of discussion include issues of scientific uncertainty, risk communication, public trust, and the role of media. Students explore the debates that shape how environmental science may be communicated to different audiences; how discourses of risk and uncertainty influence understanding of scientific issues; and the role of different agencies in the communication of science. The course is organized around six general themes which are structured to draw together understanding of conceptual and case study material: constructing science; uncertainty and risk in the context of complex environmental issues; the role of media in communicating science; science and policy uptake, governance and policy structures for managing risk and uncertainty in science; and public understanding of scientific issues.
