Course Description

This course provides a study of the techniques used to prepare, integrate, manage, and visualize complex data using modern software environments. It introduces the fundamental concepts of data science through practical use of the industry-standard software environment R. It covers how to program in R, how to effectively manage and manipulate data in R, and the "round trip" of data science (import, tidy, transform, visualize, model, and communicate).

Course Description
This course provides an archaeological perspective on cultural change in the Pacific Islands, including New Zealand, from the earliest human settlement until the early colonial era. This course covers the archaeological history of the Pacific, from the first arrival of people in Australia and Papua New Guinea to the colonization of New Zealand. The course outlines the sequence of human settlement and examines some of the major issues in contemporary Pacific research. Topics include the voyaging and exploration strategies leading to island discovery and settlement, the development of Pacific economies and social systems, and how these were transformed during the colonization of ever more remote islands. Students also examine the effects of human colonization on Pacific environments, including landscape modifications, introductions of new plants and animals, and extinctions.

Course Description
This course examines the physical and chemical processes behind geological resources, ore deposits, hydrocarbon deposits, and geothermal energy. It examines the processes and techniques of their exploitation through exploration, mining, and extraction. The course provides a foundation for the description and interpretation of rocks associated with a broad range of ore deposits and non-metallic geological resources (e.g. geothermal, oil, and gas). Through the study of chemical and physical characteristics of key deposit types, students learn to reconstruct the processes that lead to mineralization and resource formation.

Course Description

An introduction to the principles and practice of exercise science, including common and relevant myths or misconceptions. It introduces exercise science and its disciplines (e.g., biomechanics) partly by considering common myths, misconceptions, and students' understanding of these. For example, what actually is exercise or fitness? Is exercise training necessary for fitness, and is fitness necessarily improved from training? What constitutes resistance or endurance exercise, and why do they improve fitness for health, work, or sport? Do training aids such as sports drinks really aid fitness or performance? Does practice improve skill? How much practice, and what type? How would you know such things or test them yourself? Cultural and environmental contexts are also addressed.
