Course Description

This course discussed classical solution methods for first order equations. After this, linear equations of higher order with constant coefficients and first order systems are studied. Power series solutions are introduced for linear equations with variable coefficients. The last part of the course focuses on general theorems about existence and uniqueness. These theorems are important since most differential equations lack explicit solutions.

Course Description
The course deals primarily with economic decision making concerning consumption and production. The course covers the underlying principles that guide an individual's optimal consumption decisions under both certainty and uncertainty. This leads to the utility maximization and expenditure minimization problems faced by an individual which, in turn, determine individual demand. Next, the course covers the underlying principles guiding the optimal production decisions by firms in both the short run and the long run. This treatment leads to the cost minimization and profit maximization problems faced by a firm which, in turn, determine firm supply. The course also covers general equilibrium in a simple exchange economy and the problems faced by a monopolist in terms of pricing and bundling (price discrimination). The course is concluded by an extension of the monopolist's problem to the Cournot model.

Course Description
This module focuses on attention, memory, language, thinking, problem-solving, cognitive control, decision-making, and awareness. Through theoretical studies and practical exercises, this course conveys knowledge about the structure and function of the brain and key areas of modern cognitive psychology such as attention, memory, language, cognitive control, emotions, and social interaction. The understanding of normal function is the primary focus of the course, but clinical examples are also used as they provide substantial illustrations of normal functioning. Furthermore, the course provides students with knowledge of relevant research methods within the area and a major emphasis is placed on the interdisciplinary nature of the subject.

Course Description
The course explores and explains the historical processes of rapid industrialization and socio-economic modernization in Pacific Asia. First, fundamental factors and forces behind the rise of Asia's first industrial nation, Japan, are analyzed. Japan is also contrasted against the early failures of modernization in Imperial China. Secondly, explanations are provided for the emergence of Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong as Newly Industrialized Countries after 1960. Thirdly, the more recent industrial development in the ASEAN countries is studied, with reference to current trends and forces of globalization in the region. Themes such as agricultural modernization, rural industrialization, expansion of trade, impact of foreign investments and patterns of regional integration are explored and evaluated. Concepts such as developmental state, export-led growth, and growth with equity are employed and critically analyzed.

Course Description
Modernism and postmodernism are well-known concepts characterizing the period from 1789 to the present. Modernism includes the ideas behind empirical sciences, anti-idealistic philosophy, liberal democracy, secularism, and belief in reason that has emerged since the Enlightenment. Conventionally, modernism and postmodernism are separated into scientific and artistic enterprises. This course focuses on the cognitive links between what Foucault called the “human sciences” and aesthetic modernism in the arts including literary criticism. In the dynamic culture of modernism, a move towards greater subjectivity was a common feature, however in the human sciences it was modified by a devotion to rationality and scientific progress. In its first phase, postmodernism opposed modernism and regarded self and culture as linguistic constructs. Currently a move towards universalism, tradition, and religion is articulated among thinkers such as Giorgio Agamben and Slavoj i ek. The course views modernism and postmodernism primarily as modes of thinking that affirm the power of human beings to create, improve, and remake their environment with the aid of scientific knowledge, technology, and art and thus reshape the world. These modes of thinking and the ideas that constitute them are presented in a historical context.

Course Description

The course offers students an introduction to modern Swedish society from an anthropological perspective. It is based on issues of politics, social norms, and social change in Sweden and on a number of ethnographical research studies. Anthropology is often based on an empirical understanding of people's experiences and can therefore provide insights into the everyday life of people and organizations. The course enables students to investigate and analyze case studies of social and political changes in Swedish society. Examples of this include the views of political governance, work and education, and focusing on the way they affect the people concerned.
