Course Description
Modernism and postmodernism are well-known concepts characterizing the period from 1789 to the present. Modernism includes the ideas behind empirical sciences, anti-idealistic philosophy, liberal democracy, secularism, and belief in reason that has emerged since the Enlightenment. Conventionally, modernism and postmodernism are separated into scientific and artistic enterprises. This course focuses on the cognitive links between what Foucault called the “human sciences” and aesthetic modernism in the arts including literary criticism. In the dynamic culture of modernism, a move towards greater subjectivity was a common feature, however in the human sciences it was modified by a devotion to rationality and scientific progress. In its first phase, postmodernism opposed modernism and regarded self and culture as linguistic constructs. Currently a move towards universalism, tradition, and religion is articulated among thinkers such as Giorgio Agamben and Slavoj i ek. The course views modernism and postmodernism primarily as modes of thinking that affirm the power of human beings to create, improve, and remake their environment with the aid of scientific knowledge, technology, and art and thus reshape the world. These modes of thinking and the ideas that constitute them are presented in a historical context.

Course Description

The course offers students an introduction to modern Swedish society from an anthropological perspective. It is based on issues of politics, social norms, and social change in Sweden and on a number of ethnographical research studies. Anthropology is often based on an empirical understanding of people's experiences and can therefore provide insights into the everyday life of people and organizations. The course enables students to investigate and analyze case studies of social and political changes in Swedish society. Examples of this include the views of political governance, work and education, and focusing on the way they affect the people concerned.

Course Description

Training in microbiological practice and laboratory skills is an essential and important part of the course. This includes both regular practicals and a project that runs throughout the course. The project is independently planned and carried out by groups of 2-3 students and gives training in many aspects of microbiology, as well as in general laboratory practice and project planning. The theoretical parts are treated both in lectures and in problem-solving seminars. The first part of the course deals with physiology and diversity of microbes. It gives a modern view of the microbial world and its phylogeny. The structure and function of the prokaryotic cell is discussed in detail. Growth of microorganisms is analyzed from several aspects. Course Description
The course provides an increased understanding of the chemical reactions that take place in all living cells, focusing on understanding the enzymes that catalyze chemical reactions and how they are regulated. The metabolism of the cell is described in different sections of the course to understand how energy is made available through certain chemical reactions, that are used to power other chemical reactions. The lab part of the course consists of one lab where an enzyme is purified and characterized and a computer lab where students learn to use different basic bioinformatic tools.

Course Description
The course deals with the mechanisms behind and the effects of international trade. To begin with, the gains from trade, as well as a few key results relating to trade policy, are derived under the assumptions of a generic neoclassical general equilibrium model. Then a few specific varieties of that standard model are utilised to highlight effects of differences in technology and factor endowments between trading countries on trade flows as well as incomes and their distribution. In this context, claims about the effects of trade liberalization on inequality and poverty are analyzed. The course also gives an introduction to more recent developments in trade theory (taking imperfect competition, product differentiation and increasing returns to scale into account) which add other explanations for trade and its effects as well as a perspective on the role of multinational corporations.
