This course begins with instruction on debating technique, and then continues with participation in formal debates of a series of important issues affecting the world today. The course also studies examples of great speeches and great debates of the past.

Students engage in on- or off-campus teaching or teaching assistant activity to gain experience and basic skills in teaching in the ESL/EFL or CLIL classroom. Students are also required to attend classes that focus on the various elements of teaching English or other languages as a second or additional language. This upper division course is intended to develop student' interest and knowledge in language acquisition and communication across cultures, international educational exchange, and learning organizations. Specifically, this course develops basic skills in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). A certificate of completion is granted upon successful conclusion of the course.
COURSE DETAIL
This course covers the fundamentals of news, features, and creative nonfiction writing. It also introduces photo-video journalism, and documentary filmmaking. The course explores how to: recognize good stories; interview; gather data and information; develop contacts and sources; create news and feature stories; take photographs and develop photo-essays; shoot video and make short video reports or documentaries. The course also discusses global issues and the role of global mass media.
