This class object is to study fundamental concepts of solid-state physics, such as crystal structure, reciprocal lattice, x-ray, diffraction, phonon, band dispersion, Fermi surface, magnetism, semiconductor, and superconductivity. Other topics include: categories of solids; diffraction; phonons; free electrons; periodic potential; Fermi surface; semiconductors; and superconductivity.

This course covers how to use grammar and vocabulary needed to read articles and essays on familiar topics of interest and write reports on them, attend classes, and express their own opinions, toward mastering the Japanese “reading” skill that leads from intermediate to upper-intermediate level. Course Description

Students will acquire basic grammar and vocabulary needed for everyday life and attending university classes in Japan, learn the four skills “listening” and “writing”.

Eligibility: A2.1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N4 in the JLPT).

Learning Objectives: 
A2.2 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education
Review the expressions/sentence structures learned at the basic level (A1-A2.1); learn new expressions/sentence structures, and when, where, and how to use them, to achieve the below goals:
・ Comprehend concise conversations and monologues about familiar topics in everyday and classroom situations. 
・ If you prepare in advance, you can enumerate events, briefly describe them, tell stories, express your thoughts and feelings. 
・ You can interact with other people with little difficulty in everyday situation.

Course Description

This course instructs on understanding and utilizing grammar and vocabulary needed to read articles and essays on familiar topics of interest. Course assignments involve attendance, writing reports, and expression of one's own opinions, toward mastering the Japanese “listening” and  “speaking” skills that lead from intermediate to upper-intermediate level. 

Eligibility A2.2 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (N3 in the JLPT). 

Learning Objectives B1 level in the CEFR/JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education. Understand the necessary sentence structures/expressions, and when, where, and how to use them, to achieve the following goals: 

1.  In daily communication and studying at a university, understanding of a spontaneous conversation and a monologue about one's concerns (listening).

2. Describing concerns so that the other party is interested, and responding appropriately by asking questions of the other party's interests. Also, adding simple prefixes and fixed form expressions etc. in formal scenes (spoken production).

3. Responding by looking at the reaction of the opponent, by adding appropriate fillers, response, and necessary information (spoken Interaction).

Course Description
This course serves as an introduction into Japanese popular culture with a focus on Japanese otaku market. The course develops a more nuanced understanding of the related creative industries and media, as well as typical patterns of production, consumption and communication that mark Japanese popular culture of today. At the same time, links and parallels between popular culture in Japan and other countries are drawn.The course also considers multiple related phenomena, from economic conditions that influence creative industries, to consumption patterns and fan activities, to storytelling techniques, to the specificity of various media.

Course Description
This course is an introductory course for Kyudo, a traditional Japanese archery. Students are taught the basic handling of the equipment, and how to use it properly. The emphasis is placed on posture when shooting arrows and repetition of the basic skill sets. Additionally, students explore a traditional Japanese martial art and acquire proper etiquette.

Course Description
This course examines developmental biology of fish, molecular engineering in fish, and bioinformatics using computer and web sites. The course covers fundamental issues of genetic engineering and genomics in fish, and bioinformatics necessary for future researches in the fields of marine biotechnology. Topic during the class include: embryonic development in fish; forward genetics (Mutant library, Positional cloning); reverse genetics (Knockout fish, TALEN, CRISPR/Cas9); other basic techniques essential for fish biotechnology; fish genomes; practical training using computer (BLAST search, Multiple alignment, Phylogenetic tree, PubMed, Ensembl), larval and metamorphic development; transgenic fish.
