Course Description
The origins of this rich and complicated genre lie in the Middle Ages, when romance was the most popular form of secular literature and the particular narrative form in which women characters developed agency and subjectivity. This course introduces students to the history of romance, with a particular focus on medieval literature, to trace its importance not only to English literary history, but also to a history of women as readers and writers, and the ways in which male writers thought about and adapted a genre that was assumed to be feminine.

Course Description

This course examines when and why people care and help – or do not. Although the focus will be on caring for and helping other people, this course considers commitment more generally, e.g., to one’s self, to one’s relationships, to one’s country, to one’s god, to justice, etc. The course is concerned with whether non-human animals ever have similar concerns and commitments. Most sub-disciplines within psychology (e.g., biological, clinical, cognitive, developmental, personality, social) will be considered on the module, as will aspects of several related disciplines (e.g., economics, philosophy, sociology).

Course Description
This course analyzes public speaking as writing, and its relationship to literature in general. Students explore the cultural history of persuasive public speech between the American Revolution and the turn of the 20th century, and the role it played in the development of literary expression. By training in the methods of rhetorical analysis, students learn how to comprehend the meanings and craft of public speech. By placing speech-making back into broader literary history, students begin to see rhetoric and voice as central themes in the history of Anglo-American writing.

Course Description
This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to reflect on how, in times of conflict, it is possible for previously law abiding people to commit the most atrocious acts of cruelty and violence. Crimes against humanity have only recently caught the attention of criminologists and the course provides students with information on the origins and dynamics of such crimes. Students explore the work of influential social theorists, psychologists, criminologists, psychoanalysts, and philosophers, including Erich Fromm (ESCAPE FROM FREEDOM), Hannah Arendt (EICHMANN IN JERUSALEM), Zygmunt Bauman (MODERNITY AND THE HOLOCAUST) and Ernest Becker (ESCAPE FROM EVIL). In addition to contemplating the driving force of aggression, conflict, and mass violence, the course also addresses the psychological trauma experienced by victims and the role of both internal and external bystanders.
