Course Description

This course covers the basic principles of corporate finance and accounting. The course covers the study of key financial concepts, like the time value of money and arbitrage, the valuation of major securities like bonds and stocks, the financial risk and portfolio theory and the CAPM, as well as the accounting principles and reporting and the financial statements, their nature, content, use, and analysis. The nature of the course is technical and quantitative and employs tutorials and the use of exercises and applications to practice the introduced topics. To make the course more hands-on, we stress the importance of using Excel in solving financial problems, which reflects its wide use in business life. Assumed previous knowledge: for students without an economics background this is an intensive and challenging course. To the extent students lack knowledge of Mathematics and Excel, students are expected to compensate for this on their own.

Course Description

This interdisciplinary course practices a critical way of examining contemporary cultural practices. In these practices of production, dissemination, and reception, masculinity and femininity are permanently (re)constructed, just as are concepts of class, race, ethnicity, and geopolitical location. Students study cultural practices manifest through popular culture as well as examine the cultural logic underlying art practice and visual ethnographic research. In all, old and new identities are contested and reconstructed; the interaction between text and image is the main focus.

Course Description
This course familiarizes students with some of the most pressing complex social inequality issues as they relate to work, care, welfare, and health. By focusing on European societies, students learn to compare and contrast social inequality patterns, as well as responses to social inequality. Topics covered include: how various societies respond to enduring, growing or changing inequalities; whether these inequalities result in the erosion of solidarity, in an “us versus them” rhetoric, or an expansion of solidarity, such as Germany's initial response to the asylum-seeker crisis with Wir schaffen das!; the extent to which people are accepting of social inequality. Taking a sociological, psychological and political philosophical approach to these topics, this course offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding social inequality and the social policy responses in contemporary Europe.

How is cultural identity built in a framework that transcends national borders? How is transnational identity expressed and developed? These are the main research questions that guide the reflection and discussions in the first part of this course. As a case study, the course focuses on the complex identity situation of Latinos (Cubans, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans) in the United States living between two cultures and two languages. This course offers argumentation strategies that can be applied in the construction of a convincing argumentative discourse in different professional circumstances. In addition, the course offers techniques to write a critical discourse on the subject discussed in class.

Course Description
Stories drawn from lived experience are a powerful force in English language culture and society. This course examines the core themes and issues raised by a variety of cultural forms that take lived experience as their base, such as biography, memoir, autobiographical poetry and fiction, the essay, documentary, and social media. The course explores questions including: How do life writers establish the veracity of their narratives? How do they negotiate the need to tell the truth of their experience with the desire to tell an engaging story? How is life writing received by audiences, and what kinds of contributions does it make to cultural, political, and social debates? How do we respond to the complex ethical terrain of writing and reading stories based on real people and real events? Students investigate the importance of confession, testimony, witnessing, and documentation to a range of life writing forms to develop answers to these questions.

Course Description
This interdisciplinary course focuses on the languages and cultures of the peoples that dominated the British Isles during the early medieval period (c.400-c.1100) – the Anglo-Saxons, Insular Celts, and Scandinavians – and how they interacted and influenced each other. The course is aimed at students of English and Celtic, so the group is split up accordingly for the seminar sessions. The English track provides a thorough introduction to the Old English language (phonology, syntax, morphology) and helps students develop skills in translating Old English. By placing the study of Old English in its cultural historical context through the translation and discussion of a number of literary and non-literary texts, the course also explores topics such as medieval history writing, learning in Anglo-Saxon England, daily life, the position of women, manuscript culture, and early legal tradition. The Celtic track provides students with a thorough understanding of language change in all its forms (phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, etc.), with a strong focus on the Medieval Insular Celtic languages.
