Course Description
The body is the subject of a large amount of attention in current sociological and media and communications research. It has also been, historically, the focus of important philosophical discussion. This course synthesizes classical theory, contemporary debate, and emerging ideas for a critical understanding of bodies in society. Students examine both sociological theories and concepts, and how these may inform empirical research on the body in the disciplines of sociology and media and communications. The course encourages a critical interrogation of wider public ideas and debates on the body.
